Dawn is the cool end of a Brisbane summer day. In January the city averages a minimum of 21.7 °C and a maximum of 30.4 °C, and by 09:00 the mean is already 26.8 °C.1 Winter makes the early shift a dark one: on 30 June 2026 the sun does not rise until about 06:39, so a café opening at 05:00 or 06:00 starts well before daylight.2

Opening before 06:00 also costs more in wages. The Restaurant Industry Award covers cafés, and in its version consolidated on 1 July 2026, every weekday ordinary hour worked between midnight and 06:00 earns staff an extra A$4.42 on top of the base rate.3 Very early coffee has a history here. Penny Wolff, who worked at the Aromas café in Brisbane's international terminal after it opened in 1995, started on its espresso machine at 04:00, when it was the only coffee outlet open.4

Local tip: For coffee before 05:00, the choice is El Cafe on Commercial Road (from 04:00, Monday to Saturday) or the round-the-clock Death Before Decaf in New Farm; on a Sunday, Nurse Station Coffee and Juice Bar opens at 05:00.

Where these cafés are: CBD (8), West End & Highgate Hill (8), Newstead & Teneriffe (8), Coorparoo & Norman Park (6), Windsor & Wilston (6), Woolloongabba & East Brisbane (6), Milton & Toowong (4), Fortitude Valley (4), South Brisbane & South Bank (4), New Farm (3), Albion & Hamilton (3), Bardon & Ashgrove (2), Paddington & Red Hill (2), Kelvin Grove & Herston (1), Alderley & Enoggera (1), Bulimba & Hawthorne (1).

The 04:00 and 05:00 starts

Two places beat 05:00. Death Before Decaf on Brunswick Street in New Farm never closes, and El Cafe at 27 Commercial Road in Newstead starts at 04:00 six days a week and at 06:00 on Sundays.

A larger group follows at 05:00. Sugar n Spice in the CBD and Etto Catering and Cafe at 520 Wickham Street in Fortitude Valley open then on weekdays, and Ugees Espresso at 80 Boundary Street on Saturdays as well. The Cheeky Bean in West End keeps the 05:00 start from Monday to Saturday, and Nurse Station Coffee and Juice Bar opens at 05:00 every day of the week. Hello Garry, at 112 Bennetts Road, starts at 05:15 on weekdays.

Which suburbs start earliest

The early cluster is split between Newstead & Teneriffe, West End and the CBD, with Coorparoo & Norman Park, Windsor & Wilston and Woolloongabba tied behind them. Fortitude Valley, Milton & Toowong and South Brisbane each have a handful.

At 05:30 the choice spreads across the city. Blackout at 173 Latrobe Terrace in Paddington opens then every day, as does The Woolshed. on Helen Street in Newstead. Two Little Woofs Brew on Amelia Street and Hey Mr. on Boggo Road start at 05:30 on weekdays.

Early open, early closed

A dawn start usually means a short day. On weekdays about half of the cafés that open by 06:00 have closed by 14:00, and nearly eight in ten by 15:00. Hello Garry is done by 12:00 and Two Little Woofs Brew by 12:30.

A handful run long days. Hawthorne Garage is open daily from 06:00 to 20:00, Bardon Shed Coffee from 06:00 to 19:00, and The Green Edge in Windsor from 06:00 until 20:00 from Thursday to Sunday.5 Nurse Station keeps going until 19:00 on weekdays.

Saturday and Sunday at dawn

About two in three of the early openers also trade on Sundays, though more than half of those start later than on weekdays. The ones that keep 06:00 or earlier on Sunday include Ashton & Old at 459 Old Cleveland Road, Pancha Café at 33 Racecourse Road, Vinty Bean on Vernon Terrace, Freddie's in Newstead & Teneriffe and Pallet Cafe in the CBD.

Saturday is easier. El Cafe opens at 04:00, Ugees at 05:00 and Ash+Monties on Montague Road at 05:30, and Kafe Krave at 142 Newmarket Road keeps its 06:00 weekday start on Saturdays.
