Melbourne sat in cafés long before it drank espresso. By the late 1930s about 200 of the city's 450 registered cafés were coffee or tea lounges, and the first kerbside café opened at the Oriental on Collins Street in 1958.1 The tables outside came later still. Central Melbourne had two outdoor cafés in the 1980s and more than 500 by 2015, and between 1994 and 2004 the share of its lanes that were open and active rose from 8% to 92%.2

Melbourne cafés now turn up in international rankings. When The World's 100 Best Coffee Shops published its first ranking in February 2025, five Melbourne cafés made the cut: Proud Mary in Collingwood at fourth, then Veneziano Coffee Roasters (19th), Calēre Coffee (28th), Vacation Coffee (71st) and Seven Seeds (87th).3

Two 19th-century markets still anchor the coffee map. South Melbourne Market has traded since 1867, and Queen Victoria Market officially opened in March 1878.45 Queen Victoria Market now trades five days a week and is closed on Mondays and Wednesdays.6

Ordering coffee in Melbourne

The menu board uses Australian names. A short black is an espresso, a latte comes in a 220 ml glass, and a long macchiato is a long black with a dollop of foam on top.7 Order a magic and you get a double ristretto under about five ounces of milk, always in a 6 oz cup; a "one and one" is an espresso served beside a flat white in a matching cup.7 Most specialty cafés also brew at least one filter coffee, as a pour-over or from a drip brewer.7

Many cafés run table service: you sit down and a server takes the order.7 Hours are short. Most cafés close by 16:00, and the late ones stand out: Brunetti on Lygon Street in Carlton serves until 23:00 (midnight on Friday and Saturday), Napier Quarter in Fitzroy until 23:00, and Monarch Cakes on Acland Street in St Kilda until 22:00.

Tipping is voluntary in Australia, where minimum wages are high by world standards; if you do tip for good service, 10% is the usual amount.8 Surcharges are more likely to show up. Many cafés add 10% or 15% on public holidays, when award wages for hospitality staff can reach 250% of the base rate, and the surcharge has to be clearly advertised.9

Laptop rules vary. It is becoming more common for Melbourne cafés to ban or restrict laptops to keep tables turning, and a directory called Cafe Workplace lists 140 that welcome laptop workers, mostly on weekdays outside brunch hours.10 Moving between the CBD's lanes costs nothing by tram: the Free Tram Zone, introduced at the start of 2015, covers the center, Docklands and Queen Victoria Market.11

FAQ

Cafés in Melbourne: common questions

How much does a coffee cost in Melbourne?

In May 2025 Torrens University put the average Melbourne flat white at A$6.00 and an iced long black at A$6.50, and ST. ALi in South Melbourne was charging A$6.50 for a flat white in April 2024. Across Victoria the average cup cost A$4.61 in June 2026, the cheapest state average in Australia. Oat, soy or almond milk can add A$0.50–1.00.

Which Melbourne neighborhood has the most cafés?

CBD and South Melbourne & Southbank have the most cafés, followed by South Yarra & Prahran. In the CBD, cafés crowd the lanes between Flinders Street and La Trobe Street, and several keep weekday-only hours. South of the river, cafés string along St Kilda Road and Clarendon Street and gather around the South Melbourne Market blocks.

What is a magic coffee in Melbourne?

A magic is a Melbourne order: a double ristretto under about five ounces of milk, always served in a 6 oz cup. Melbourne menus also call an espresso a short black, serve a latte in a 220 ml glass, and offer a "one and one", an espresso served beside a flat white in a matching cup.

Do you tip at cafés in Melbourne?

Tipping is voluntary in Australia, where minimum wages are high by world standards; if you tip for good service, 10% is the usual amount. A public-holiday surcharge is more likely: many Australian cafés add 10% or 15% on those days, when award wages can reach 250% of the base rate, and the surcharge must be clearly advertised.

Can you work on a laptop in Melbourne cafés?

It depends on the café. It is becoming more common for Melbourne cafés to ban or restrict laptops to keep tables turning. Cafe Workplace, a directory created by Joseph Montuoro, lists 140 Melbourne cafés that welcome laptop workers, mostly on weekdays and outside brunch hours. Ask at the counter before you open one at a busy table.

What time do cafés close in Melbourne?

Most of Melbourne's cafés shut by 16:00. The late exceptions include Brunetti on Lygon Street in Carlton, open until 23:00 and until midnight on Friday and Saturday, Napier Quarter in Fitzroy until 23:00 every day, and Monarch Cakes on Acland Street in St Kilda until 22:00.
