A night out in Tokyo is planned around shūden (終電, the last train). JR East said in October 2020 that it would move last trains earlier on 17 lines, by up to about 37 minutes.1 The change took effect on 13 March 2021: from that date the last inner-loop Yamanote train left Ōsaki at 00:22 and reaches Ikebukuro at 01:04, and the outer loop's leaves Ōsaki at 00:24.2

A yoru kafe (夜カフェ, night café) fills the hours before that train. Shibuya and Shinjuku have the most late cafés, followed by Kanda & Jimbōchō, Harajuku & Omotesandō and Nihonbashi. Some are decades-old kissaten (喫茶店, traditional coffee houses), some double as bars after dark, and a handful run past midnight.

Local tip: Look up your line's last train before ordering a second cup: from March 2021, the final Yamanote trains have left Ōsaki at 00:22 and 00:24.2

Old kissaten that keep the lights on

Jimbōchō, the secondhand-book district, has two of the oldest. Ladrio (ラドリオ), opened in 1949, is said to be the neighborhood's oldest kissaten, and it credits its Vienna coffee to a Viennese way of drinking taught by an international student: the cream on top kept the cup warm for customers lost in books or talk. It cost ¥650 as of 2026.3 Ladrio opens weekdays 11:30–22:30.

Sabōru (さぼうる), from 1955, is known for seven flavors of cream soda at ¥850 and pizza toast at ¥950, as of 2026.3 It closes at 19:30, but さぼうる2 (Sabōru 2) next door stays open until 22:00 from Monday to Saturday.

In Ginza, Café de l'Ambre opened in 1948 and serves only coffee, roasted from green beans aged for more than ten years; in 2021 its Blanc et Noir, layered with evaporated milk, cost ¥850.4 It is open Monday to Saturday 12:00–22:00 and closes at 19:00 on Sundays.

All night in Shinjuku

珈琲貴族エジンバラ (Edinburgh Coffee Kizoku), at 2-4 Shinjuku 3-chōme, never closes. It brews siphon coffee and has 130 seats, Wi-Fi, power outlets and a copier.5 Elsewhere in Shinjuku, Caffice and Brooklyn Parlor stay open until 23:00, and No. 13 Cafe at 44-1 Kabukichō 2-chōme does too on Friday and Saturday.

When the trains have stopped, a manga kissa (漫画喫茶, a manga and internet café) is the budget fallback: at Kaikatsu Club, an open seat for six hours cost ¥1,140 and a private room about ¥2,570 as of 2025.6

Shimokitazawa after the theaters

Shimokitazawa has been a theater town since the Honda Theater, now with 386 seats, opened there in 1982.7 Its late cafés keep long hours: 漫画と珈琲 (Manga to Kōhī, manga and coffee) runs daily 09:00–02:00, kate coffee 10:00–00:00, and アンドレア (Andrea), at 5-25 Daita 6-chōme, opens at 14:00 and closes at midnight. Et -THE CULTURAL COFFEEHOUSE covers the long day, 07:30–22:00.

Late cafés by neighborhood

In Shibuya, Pells Coffee & Bar at 3-4 Uguisudani-chō opens 08:00–00:00 every day except Tuesday, Valley Park Stand at 20-10 Jingūmae 6-chōme runs 08:00–23:00, and JINNAN CAFE 11:30–23:00. Harajuku's NOA Coffee also closes at 23:00. In Ginza, the SNACK at 5-4 Ginza 7-chōme stays open until 23:00 on weekdays, and キルフェボン (Qu'il fait bon) until 23:00 daily.

Roar Coffee at 19-11 Hatchōbori 2-chōme serves until 23:00 on weekdays. In Kagurazaka, Table Soccer Cafe Shines opens at 18:00 and closes at 02:00, or 05:00 on Friday and Saturday nights.
