Melbourne's café day starts early and ends early. On a Monday, about half of the city's cafés close before 16:00. Visitors notice: in October 2026 Yahoo Lifestyle reported tourists and expats complaining online that coffee is hard to find after 14:00 or 15:00.1

Owners point to costs. Steven, who runs Sana Coffee Co in Cheltenham, closed at 16:00 in his first year, found the last hour rarely brought customers, and now shuts at 14:30; staying open past 15:00, he said, would mean a whole new team for dinner service. The same report estimated that three casual staff cost a café A$80–100 an hour, so it must sell around 16 coffees an hour at about A$5 each just to cover wages.1

Local tip: Before 07:00 on a weekend, head for Brunetti on Lygon Street or The Local Cafe on Moore Street in Footscray; most CBD early openers, such as Anda on Spring Street, are shut on Saturdays and Sundays.
