In São Paulo the padaria, padoca in slang, is bakery, snack bar and café in one room: bread by the kilo, coffee at the balcão (counter) and a menu that runs from pão de queijo (cheese bread) to toasted sandwiches. Each September, around World Bread Day, Procon-SP, the state consumer agency, prices 18 breakfast items at 50 padarias spread evenly over the city's five regions.1
Bread is still sold by weight. In September 2026 a kilo of pão francês, the crusty white roll behind every pão na chapa, averaged R$24.69, with the smallest gap between regions of any item: R$23.91 in the East Zone and R$26.23 in the West.1 Pão italiano varied most, from R$29.93 a kilo in the East to R$46.31 in the West.1
Local tip: Price the same breakfast across town before settling on a padaria: in 2026 pão na chapa with a small filter coffee averaged R$12.61 in the East Zone and R$15.55 in the West, and Galeria dos Pães on Rua Estados Unidos covers the hours after midnight.12
Where these cafés are: Vila Mariana & Saúde (6), Itaim Bibi & Vila Olímpia (3), Santo Amaro & Chácara Santo Antônio (2), Tatuapé & Belém (2), Liberdade & Aclimação (2), Vila Madalena (1), Centro & República (1), Pinheiros (1), Campo Belo & Jabaquara (1), Brooklin (1), Higienópolis & Santa Cecília (1), Jardins (1).

Most people order a combo. Procon-SP's 2026 city averages: pão na chapa with a small cup of filter coffee, R$14.20; with a pingado in a glass, R$17.58; a pão de queijo with a small filter coffee, R$17.30; a misto quente (ham-and-cheese toastie) with a small espresso, R$31.73.1 The East Zone is the cheapest region, with the pão na chapa and small coffee combo at R$12.61 against R$15.55 in the West.1
Sweets go by the kilo too: a small sonho, the cream-filled doughnut, averaged R$73.44 a kilo, and mini pães de queijo R$80.56.1 Against 2025, the pingado rose most, by 15.37%, while pão italiano was the one item that got cheaper, by 9.83%.1
As of early 2024, several São Paulo padarias ran around the clock. Bella Paulista, at Rua Haddock Lobo, 354 in Cerqueira César, opened in 2002 and stocks about 5,000 products, with a wine cellar, a wood-fired pizza oven and a burger counter.2 Galeria dos Pães, at Rua Estados Unidos, 1645 in Jardins, was founded in 1999 and opens 24 hours every day of the year.2
Panificadora Viana, on Avenida Bernardino de Campos, 334 in Vila Mariana, dates from 1932 and serves drinks and cocktails as well as bread. Iracema, at Avenida Angélica, 101 in Santa Cecília, sets out a breakfast buffet from 06:00 to 11:00, priced by the kilo.2
Bom Retiro, north of the old center, is best known today for its Korean community, though Koreans are not the neighborhood's largest group; the first official group of Korean immigrants reached Brazil in 1963.3 In 2023 a Korea Town project backed by the Korean consul-general had Rua Prates renamed Prates-Coreia.3 On that street, Sorbing Korean Dessert Cafe at number 547 opens Monday to Saturday 08:00–21:00, with Wi-Fi and brunch.
Vila Mariana has the most bakery cafés, ahead of Itaim Bibi and Liberdade. Loulou Pâtisserie at Rua Luis Góis, 810 opens daily 09:00–19:00, Astronauta Café on Rua Rio Grande opens Thursday to Sunday, and Luz da Villa is at Rua Áurea, 422. In Liberdade, Café Liberté on Rua Doutor Américo de Campos and Soa Cake at Rua Castro Alves, 507 both have Wi-Fi.
Ça-va Café, on Avenida Brigadeiro Faria Lima, 4055 in Itaim Bibi, is the earliest of the bakery cafés: 07:00–19:00 Monday to Saturday and 08:00–17:00 on Sunday. Dóffee Donuts & Coffee, at Rua Clodomiro Amazonas, 1295, has outdoor tables. Padaria Leiriense is on Avenida Padre Antônio José dos Santos, 1716 in Brooklin, and Pão, at Rua Mourato Coelho, 1039 in Vila Madalena, opens daily 08:00–19:00.
In the old center, Café Girondino, on the corner of Rua Boa Vista and Rua São Bento facing the São Bento monastery, charged R$20.90 for pão na chapa with an espresso in 2025.4 The citywide average for that pair was R$16.25 in September 2026.1
