Montreal runs its own free network, MTLWiFi, at more than 275 locations, including libraries, parks, some borough offices, tourist sites and commercial streets.1 There is no password: add the MTLWiFi network on your device and the connection is immediate, 24 hours a day.1 The network is open and unencrypted; devices on it cannot reach each other, and a firewall blocks some sites.1
Café Wi-Fi is thickest on the Plateau and in Mile End, which together account for more than a third of cafés with Wi-Fi. Centre-ville is third, with the Quartier Latin and Petite-Italie level behind it, and Outremont’s Avenue Van Horne has a small cluster of its own.
Local tip: MTLWiFi is free and needs no password, but it is open and unencrypted, so use a café’s own network or your phone’s data for banking and work logins.1
