Kensington Market and Chinatown have the most cafés with Wi-Fi, ahead of the Financial District, the Annex and Downtown Yonge. Baldwin Street alone has Butter & Blue at number 7, Carbonic Coffee at 37 and The Sweet Spot at 41.

In late 2023 a TikTok video of 25 open laptops in the lobby of the Ace Hotel went viral, and blogTO declared working from Toronto cafés “totally out of control.”1 Since then several cafés have introduced laptop-free hours, while others still welcome remote work, so the house rule matters as much as the network.2

Local tip: Before you open a laptop after 17:00 or on a weekend, look for a table card or ask at the counter: several Toronto cafés keep laptop-free evenings or weekends, and Silver Fox on Bloor West bans devices at all times.

Laptop-free hours at Toronto cafés

Rules are set café by café. Neo Coffee Bar keeps laptops and tablets away at certain times, including after 17:00, with exceptions for medical and accessibility needs.2 Flying Books at 371 Queen Street West allows laptops until 17:00 on weekdays but not in the evening or at weekends, when it becomes a wine bar. Silver Fox Coffee Boutique at 2285 Bloor Street West allows no devices at any time.2

In Kensington Market, Cafe Pamenar stopped laptops after 18:00 on weekdays and after 13:00 at weekends once it began serving alcohol at night. Its owner put the problem plainly: one coffee or cookie over two or three hours brings in less than C$10. The Ace Hotel lobby has no laptops from 17:00 to 23:00, during live music.1

Paying for the table instead of the coffee

Bampot House, the tea house and board-game café at 201 Harbord Street, turned the question around. In November 2023 it introduced anti-café hours, where you pay by the hour rather than by the order.3 The 2023 rate was C$6 an hour, or C$5 for students, including selected teas, a bowl of soup, Wi-Fi, charging and the game library.1

Bevy, at The Combine in the CBC building at John and Wellington, opened in February 2023 with long tables with charging outlets, semi-soundproof booths and armchairs. In Roncesvalles, AM Coffee Studio opened a co-working room downstairs in 2024, with a C$20 day pass from 07:00 to 18:00 that included printing.3

The idea of a table without a screen is older. When Snakes & Lattes opened in the Annex in 2010, it had no Wi-Fi at all; public Wi-Fi came later.4

Wi-Fi cafés by hour of the day

For an early start, Found Coffee at 225 Front Street West opens 06:00–18:00 daily, Jet Fuel Coffee at 519 Parliament Street 06:00–20:00, and Dineen Coffee at 140 Yonge Street from 06:30 on weekdays. Mercury Espresso on Queen Street East also opens at 06:30.

In the evening, Café Reznikoff at 75 St George Street and Bloom Cafe at 596 Yonge Street both stay open until 22:00 every day, Plearn Cafe at 27 Carlton Street until 21:00, and Understory at 505 Church Street until 22:00 from Tuesday to Saturday. In Bloordale, World Peace Donuts at 993 Bloor Street West runs until 01:00 from Sunday to Thursday.
