A Helsinki bakery café is built around pulla, the sweet yeast dough that eastern Finland also calls vehnänen and the west and north call nisu.1 Pikkupulla is a small round bun topped with pearl sugar, voisilmäpulla has butter and sugar pressed into a well that rises into a crater, and pitko is a braided loaf, usually of three strands.1
Kluuvi has the most bakery cafés, mostly waffle and cake counters, while Kamppi, Kallio, Jätkäsaari and Kalasatama have two each. Konditoria Briossi on Kalevankatu and Way Bakery on Agricolankatu both open at 08:00 on weekdays.
Local tip: Runeberg tortes leave most counters after 5 February, Runeberg Day, so January is the month to try one.2

The Runeberg torte, about 100 grams of almond cake flavored with rum or arrack under a ring of icing and raspberry jam, is sold from early January until Runeberg Day on 5 February. Fredrik Edvard Ekberg made it popular when he began selling it at his Helsinki café in 1865.2
Laskiaispulla, the cream-filled Shrove bun, became a common Shrove Tuesday treat in the 1950s. Korvapuusti day on 4 October is a newer import, taken from Sweden and first marked in 2006.1
Way Bakery, beside Karhupuisto in Kallio, bakes its sourdough on site, serves it in the café and sells loaves to take away; the same bread goes to the restaurant Grön.3 Its founders include Toni Feri of Let Me Wine, and natural wines are poured all day.3 The café stays open until 20:00 on weekdays and Saturdays and until 16:00 on Sundays.
Patisserie Teemu Aura describes itself as a bakery and confectioner mixing modern and classic baking with bold flavor pairings, with pastries baked fresh each morning; its Hakaniemi shop is at Siltasaarenkatu 12.4 The Punavuori branch is at Fredrikinkatu 19.
In Hakaniemi market hall, the Nami counter sells Karelian pies from Liperi, sourdough bread, cinnamon buns and apple-doughnut "pigs", with laskiaispullat in season.5 Kakkugalleria, at Siltasaarenkatu 13, opens 09:00–18:00 on weekdays. Farther west, Victoria Patisserie and Meli Cafe & Bakery are in Jätkäsaari, and Magnolia Coffee & Bakery in Pasila stays open until 21:00 from Monday to Saturday.
In the center, Cloudspoon at Mannerheimintie 3 is open until 21:00 from Monday to Saturday, Happy Waffle on Vuorikatu opens from Wednesday to Saturday, and WaffDaddy is at Pohjoisesplanadi 33. Ekberg on Bulevardi bakes the bread and croissants for its weekday breakfast buffet in its own bakery.6 In Kalasatama, Boa & Bim on Käenkuja bakes and serves brunch from Tuesday to Sunday.
Café Regatta's 2026 price list is a fair guide to the classics: a cinnamon bun is €3.70, a donut €3.60, blueberry pie with vanilla sauce €4.90 and an almond croissant €4.99.7 Its rice pie with egg spread, €3.50, is the classic Karelian pie: a thin rye crust with rice, under munavoi, butter mixed with chopped boiled egg.78
