Draußen sitzen (sitting outside) in Hamburg follows the water. The Außenalster, the lake in the middle of the city, covers about 164 hectares, and a 7.4 km path runs around its shore, marked with stones every half kilometer.1 Downriver, the Elbe beach lies below the Museumshafen at Övelgönne, reached from the Neumühlen landing, and draws walkers, joggers and people with barbecues.2
Most cafés with outdoor tables are on ordinary streets, though. Eimsbüttel has the most, ahead of the Altstadt & Neustadt and Winterhude, with Ottensen close behind. Many tables go out only for the season: the city usually grants sidewalk permits for one season at a time, for example from March to October.3
Local tip: On a sunny weekend, get to the Alsterperle at 08:00, two hours earlier than its weekday opening; there is no indoor seating, so check the sky before you go.4

The Alsterperle at Eduard-Rhein-Ufer 1, on the Uhlenhorst shore, is a former public toilet turned open-air café, and it has no indoor seating at all: people eat and drink at the tables outside, under large trees, often with swans for company.4 It opens at 10:00 on weekdays and at 08:00 on weekends and holidays, stays open until the sun goes, in heat, frost or storm, and its pea soup is the lunchtime regular.4
At the north end of the lake, Bobby Reich at Fernsicht 2 looks over the Außenalster from every seat, opens daily from 10:00 between 1 January and 23 December, and serves breakfast from 10:00 to 13:00.5 Upstream in Winterhude, Café Leinpfad has a terrace directly over the Alster but closes for winter until 1 April 2027.6
Övelgönne itself is a footpath above the river, lined with old houses where pilots and ship captains lived, some of them several hundred years old.2 From the Neumühlen landing the path passes the museum harbor, where historic working boats such as cutters, steam tugs and fireboats lie at the quay with signs describing each one.2
Ahoi Strandkiosk at Övelgönne 57 opens daily 08:00–21:00 and takes cash only, so bring coins.
The Stadtpark is served by two stations on the U3 line, Borgweg and Saarlandstraße.7 The Trinkhalle, at the corner of Otto-Wels-Straße and Südring, is about 100 m from Borgweg; from October it opens Thursday and Friday 13:00–17:00 and at weekends 11:00–18:00, and from April it starts at 12:00 on Thursdays and Fridays and stays open until 18:00.8
Across the street at Landhaus Walter, Café Walter serves changing cakes such as poppy-seed crumble cake and a chocolate-nut sheet cake, on Saturdays 14:00–18:00 and Sundays 13:00–18:00.9 In the middle of the park, Café am Planschbecken takes its name from the paddling pool, which covers 3,000 m² and is 30 to 40 cm deep.7 The Lesecafe Stadtpark on Saarlandstraße takes cash only.
Away from the water, the tables line shopping streets. In Eimsbüttel, Black Hat Coffee is at Eppendorfer Weg 66 and Black Line at 67, and Café Estrella at Weidenallee 63 opens at 07:00 on weekdays. In the Neustadt, Amber Café on Schaarsteinwegsbrücke opens at 07:00 on weekdays, and Butterbrot at Steinhöft 5 stays open until 23:00 on Saturdays.
Outdoor tables close earlier than the rooms behind them. In the Hamburg-Mitte district, guidance for café owners allows outdoor service from 06:00 to 23:00, and until midnight on Fridays, Saturdays and the evening before public holidays; after that, guests may not stay on at the tables.10 The city also offers a lower fee, a climate bonus, to businesses that do without heaters on their terraces.3
