Hong Kong has a fourth meal. Siu yeh (宵夜, the late-night snack) comes after dinner, usually between 21:00 and 06:00, and many restaurants open or stay open from about 21:00 to serve it, although few run 24 hours.1 Dessert is the one part of it that follows fashion: red bean soup and mango pudding are the traditional orders, French pastries and artisanal ice pops the newer ones.1
That habit shapes which cafés stay open. Tong sui (糖水, "sugar water"), the sweet soups such as red bean and sweet almond, are sold in shops that mostly date from the postwar years.2 Among cafés, the late ones lean to sweets and tea as much as coffee. Mong Kok and Kowloon City have the most cafés open past 22:00, with Causeway Bay third; elsewhere on the Island they are scattered from Kennedy Town to Central.
Local tip: For coffee after 23:00, FLM on Queen's Road Central in Sheung Wan serves until 01:00 from Monday to Saturday; on the Kowloon side, Sweet Tooth in Mong Kok closes at midnight.
Where these cafés are: Mong Kok & Yau Ma Tei (8), Kowloon City & Kai Tak (6), Causeway Bay, Tai Hang & Tin Hau (4), Sheung Wan (2), Tsim Sha Tsui & Jordan (2), Sham Shui Po (1), Kennedy Town & Sai Ying Pun (1), Central, Soho & Lan Kwai Fong (1).

Mong Kok and Yau Ma Tei after 22:00
Mong Kok's late cups come from bing sutts, dessert cafés and small tea bars rather than espresso bars. Christy's Café (華星冰室) on Sai Yeung Choi Street South keeps a 07:00 start and a 23:00 finish every day, and Sweet Tooth opens at 14:30 and serves until midnight. 雞蛋屋, at 577 Nathan Road, runs 12:00–22:00 from Tuesday to Sunday.
A cluster of 22:00 closers sits a few blocks apart: Moontone on Portland Street, FooDo on Tung Choi Street, 茶芝味 on Kwong Wa Street and 楓 Kaede, which opens at 10:00. Coffee Lowa (龍華軒) on Dundas Street closes at the same hour. In September 2023 the government's Night Vibes Hong Kong campaign named the Temple Street night market, in Yau Ma Tei, as one of the places it wanted to liven up after dark.3
Kai Tak Mall: the 22:00 cluster in Kowloon City
Most of Kowloon City's late cafés are inside Kai Tak Mall at 38 Shing Kai Road, next to the sports park. Grove, in Mall 3, has the longest day there, 08:00–22:00. In Mall 2, JOMO, 本地薑物 LOCOGINGER and the tea bar 良茶隅 Herbaceous Teas all open 10:00–22:00, as does 南洋屋 Pineseas; 啊一檸檬茶 The One Lemon Tea, also on Shing Kai Road, starts an hour later.
Event nights run later still. By August 2025 the mall had more than 70 dining outlets, and nearly 30 percent of them had extended their hours to midnight for crowds leaving the stadium.5
Hong Kong Island: Haven Street to Queen's Road Central
On the Island the latest cup is in Sheung Wan: FLM, at 237 Queen's Road Central, opens at noon and closes at 01:00 from Monday to Saturday. Higher up the hill, SP_CE on Po Hing Fong serves until 22:00 daily. In Kennedy Town, Cobohouse by 2am on South Lane splits its weekday hours into lunch and 18:00 to midnight, and opens straight through from noon at weekends.
Causeway Bay's late cafés sit within a few streets of each other. Life Dessert at 14 Haven Street opens at 14:00 and closes at 23:00; Sleepless, a few doors along, finishes at 22:00. 咖啡弄 Coffee Alley on Pennington Street runs noon to 23:00, the same hours as its Kowloon branch on Hankow Road in Tsim Sha Tsui. Cafe Corridor on Russell Street stays open to 23:00 on Saturdays. In Central, The Diner on Arbuthnot Road closes at 22:30.
Late cafés open late in the day, too
About half of the late cafés open at noon or later. Life Dessert and Coffee Lowa start at 14:00, while FLM, both Coffee Alley branches and 廿三廿四 Two Three Four on Tai Po Road in Sham Shui Po open at 12:00; Two Three Four stays to 22:00 from Friday to Sunday. For a full day, REACTION Coffee Roasters on Mody Road serves 08:00–22:00, and The Diner on Arbuthnot Road opens at 07:30.
The night economy has had official help. Night Vibes Hong Kong ran from the Mid-Autumn Festival in 2023 into early 2024; about 80 malls put on night events, some staying open until 23:00, and the MTR gave one free ride for every five taken after 22:30, up to four per passenger.43
