Yogyakarta's nickname is Kota Pelajar, the City of Students, and Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) on its northern side is the largest university in Indonesia.2 In 2024 the Special Region of Yogyakarta counted 410,789 students at campuses under the higher-education ministry, the sixth-largest student population of any province.1

Much of their coursework happens in cafés. The habit is called nugas, from tugas (assignment), and IDN Times Jogja reported in 2026 that around 20:00 about half the tables in a café are often students with laptops open. Its explanation: a kos, the rented room most students live in, is where people sleep and scroll, so getting started there is harder.3

Local tip: Order something for every person at the table when you sit down to work: a cup of coffee can cost as little as Rp5,000 at a student café, and Jogja owners have spoken out publicly about groups that stay for hours on a single order.

Jalan Kaliurang and the streets around UGM

Jalan Kaliurang, known as Jakal, runs north past UGM, and Wi-Fi is as common in the cafés around it as anywhere in the city. Addresses along it go by kilometer post, as in Km 5,7. LEIDEN Coffee & Work, at No. 7 Gang Dandangulo, opens 08:00–23:00, and Canie Coffee & Space, at 99 Jalan Pandega Marta, 09:00–22:00, while Kedai Domore on Gang Buntu only opens at 16:00.

Two cafés on Jalan Kaliurang never close: Cold 'N Brew at Km 5,7 and Sender Coffe. East of campus in Gejayan and Demangan, Ekologi Desk & Coffee is at 10a Jalan Pandean Sari, Basabasi Nologaten and Bento Nologaten share Jalan Jatempanol, and Paperplane Coffee, at Jalan Pringgodani No.1B, has air-conditioning as well as tables outside.

Wi-Fi south of the Kraton and in the old center

The area around the Kraton and Prawirotaman ties with Gejayan and Malioboro for the most Wi-Fi cafés in Jogja. Ruang Jaka Coffee & Free Wifi, at 17B Jalan Polowijan, is air-conditioned, takes cards and opens 10:00–23:00. Dropshot Espresso Bar runs 08:00–23:30, and Tirana art house & kitchen, at 55 Jalan Suryonodiningratan, 09:00–00:00. Omah Roti Sidomukti, at 32 Jalan Sidomukti, is a bakery with Wi-Fi.

Near Malioboro, Cafe Manuk Londho at 213 Jalan Tukangan is open 24 hours, and Angkringan KR Yogyakarta on Jalan P Mangkubumi is a night stall with Wi-Fi, trading 19:30–05:30. For a desk rather than a café table, Omah Mapan Coworking Space & Cafe is on Jalan Prof. Dr. Soepomo in Umbulharjo.

What a coffee costs in Jogja

A regular cappuccino in Yogyakarta costs about Rp22,000, within a range of Rp11,000 to Rp35,000, as of October 2026.6 At the cheap end, Kopi PakPho in Sorowajan sold iced tea and a cup of coffee for Rp5,000 in 2024, the same as the coffee stalls around it.5

Those prices matter to a student budget. A 2024 survey by UPN Veteran Yogyakarta and Bank Indonesia put the average student's monthly cost of living at Rp2,966,514, above the city's minimum wage of Rp2,492,997, with food and drink taking 26% of spending.4

Most beans come from elsewhere. In 2022 Pandangan Jogja reported that few of the region's roughly 3,000 coffee shops sold coffee grown in the province: beans from Aceh Gayo, Flores, Toraja and Kintamani in Bali were easier to find than Kopi Merapi or Kopi Suroloyo from Kulon Progo.7

Order first, and order per person

Long laptop sessions have a local flashpoint. In June 2024 Agus Arya, owner of Kopi PakPho in Sorowajan, went viral complaining about rojali, short for rombongan jarang beli (groups that rarely buy): students who stay for hours and order little.5 In one case 15 people worked on laptops at his café and three ordered. Warning signs, staff asking at tables and a pay-what-you-like coffee did not change much.5

Some of his regular student customers order ahead by WhatsApp before they arrive.5

FAQ

Wi-Fi in Yogyakarta: questions

Which areas of Yogyakarta have the most Wi-Fi cafés for students?

Gejayan, east of the UGM campus, the streets around the Kraton and Prawirotaman, and the Malioboro area have the most Wi-Fi cafés in Yogyakarta, with Jalan Kaliurang, known as Jakal, close behind. On Jakal, LEIDEN Coffee & Work on Gang Dandangulo opens 08:00–23:00 and Canie Coffee & Space on Jalan Pandega Marta 09:00–22:00.

What does nugas mean in Yogyakarta café culture?

Nugas comes from tugas, meaning assignment, and describes students doing coursework, often in a café rather than at home.
