Most Kyoto cafés close by 18:00, so a coffee after dinner takes some planning. The ones that stay open fall into two groups: old kissaten (喫茶店, coffee houses) kept by the same owners for decades, and newer cafés around Kyoto Station that work until 22:00.
Hanafusa in Okazaki keeps the latest regular hours among them, daily from 08:00 until 02:00 the next morning, with no closing day.12 It is a minute's walk from the Higashi-Tennōchō city bus stop.1
Local tip: Take a counter seat at Hanafusa to watch the siphon work; the coffee takes about a minute from order to cup.2

Hanafusa and the siphon
Hanafusa dates from 1955.1 The owner's father ran the original shop on Ura-Teramachi, near Shijō Kawaramachi, and it was the first in Kyoto to brew with siphons.12 His son started helping there as a teenager, went independent at 28 and later opened this branch in Higashi-Tennō-chō; when the original closed in 2001, he took the Hanafusa name for his two shops, North and East.1
Each cup is brewed to order in a siphon from beans he roasts himself once a week, and the counter is the place to watch it.12 As of 2024 the Santos blend cost ¥540, the Mocha ¥580 and a baked cheesecake ¥400; around the 1970 Osaka Expo, a cup was ¥100.2
Smoking in older kissaten
An old kissaten may still allow smoking. Under Japan's revised smoking rules, an eatery that was already open on 1 April 2020, is individually run or capitalized at ¥50 million or less, and has no more than 100 m² of seating can let customers smoke, and no end date is set for that exception.4
Such a place must post a sign saying it allows smoking, and nobody under 20, customer or staff, may enter the smoking area.4 Hanafusa allowed smoking when Sarai visited in 2021.1
Late cafés around Kyoto Station
Kyoto Station & Shichijō has the most late cafés. Omofu, a specialty coffee café, is open daily 07:00–22:00, and Pâtisserie & Cafe Del'immo KYOTO serves until 22:00 every day, from 10:00 on weekdays and 08:00 at weekends. FabCafe Kyoto stays open until 22:00 Tuesday to Friday but closes at 19:00 at weekends, and Gojo Cafe runs 13:00–22:00, closed Thursdays.
Elsewhere, 西陣イノクマカフェ (Nishijin Inokuma Café) is open daily 11:30–22:00 with Wi-Fi and outdoor seating. In Okazaki, すなば (Sunaba) is a morning café most days, 07:00–11:00, but on Friday and Saturday it stays open until 23:00.
Kiyamachi after midnight
Downtown, the night runs later on Kiyamachi. Shinya Kissa/Hall Tamon (深夜喫茶/ホール 多聞), opened in March 2024 in the basement of the Kyoto Golden Building on Kiyamachi-dōri south of Sanjō, lets guests stay until 03:00 and sometimes doubles as an event hall.3 Its staff say the entertainment district has few places to sit over a single coffee, and it takes in people who have drunk too much or are waiting for the first train.3
As of 2025, a rum-laced gâteau chocolat cost ¥690 and the late-night Napolitan spaghetti ¥1,300.3 It is about four minutes on foot from Keihan Sanjō Station, and its sister shop, Shinya Kissa Shinshinshin, is in Kitashirakawa.3
