Look for Wi-Fi ari (Wi-Fiあり, Wi-Fi available) on a café's door or menu, and keep the city's own network as a backup. Sapporo City Wi-Fi went into service on 1 October 2015 and covers subway stations on all three lines, Odori Park from 1- to 11-chōme, the Chi-ka-ho underground walkway and the Aka-pla plaza at Kita 3-jō, along with Maruyama Zoo.1

Beyond the city network, the tourism office counts about 2,400 free hotspots across Sapporo run by NTT East, usable whatever your mobile carrier or phone maker; convenience stores and shopping centers that display its mark are among them, and their staff can explain how to connect.2

Local tip: Register for Sapporo City Wi-Fi at the first hotspot you reach, such as a subway station, while you still have a signal: after that each connection gives you 30 minutes, as many times a day as you need.1

Where these cafés are: Odori & Tanukikoji (3), Susukino (2), Sapporo Station (2), Yamahana & Fushimi (2), Odori West (1), Hokkaido University & Kita 18 (1).

How Sapporo City Wi-Fi works

The network is free and needs no password, but you register once, with an email address or a social-media login. Each session lasts 30 minutes, with no limit on how many times you reconnect, and the portal is in Japanese, English, Chinese, Korean and Thai.1

Pick the SSID Sapporo_City_Wi-Fi on a device that can see 5 GHz signals, or Sapporo_City_Wi_Fi_2G if it can't. The service runs around the clock, except in Odori Park, where it is on from 06:00 to 23:00.1 Because the link is unencrypted, the city advises against sending card numbers or other sensitive data over it.1

If you already use the Japan Connected-free Wi-Fi app, you can skip the registration: the app connects to hotspots across Japan, including airports and train stations, and comes in 11 languages.2

Where the cafés with Wi-Fi are

Odori & Tanukikoji has the most cafés with Wi-Fi, followed by Susukino, Yamahana & Fushimi and Sapporo Station. Near the TV Tower, ワールドブックカフェ (World Book Café) is on a fifth floor at Minami 1-jō Nishi 1-chōme, and オニヤンマ コーヒー&ビア at Minami 1-jō Nishi 6-chōme pairs Wi-Fi with coffee, beer and vegan food. In Susukino, HIPPIES sapporo susukino opens 11:00–18:00 and closes on Mondays, and Coffee & Wine has outdoor seats and does takeaway.

Two weekday kissaten north of Odori offer it too. 純喫茶オリンピア at Kita 4-jō Nishi 6-chōme, near Sapporo Station, opens 10:00–18:00 Monday to Friday, and 珈琲倶楽部 at Kita 4-jō Nishi 16-chōme opens 08:00–18:00 on weekdays. Both are smoke-free.

Long hours for a laptop

For a long session, LAMP LIGHT BOOKS CAFE is the obvious choice: it has Wi-Fi and power outlets and never closes. When it opened in 2021 it shelved about 4,000 mystery and travel books, plus novels by Hokkaido authors, and let non-guests read in the café.3

North of the station, City Oasis カフェ opens at 07:30 and closes at 23:00, every day but Wednesday, and has Wi-Fi. In winter the underground walkway helps: Chi-ka-ho is inside the city network, so you can stay online between Sapporo Station and Odori without going outside.1

The subway platforms help between neighborhoods: the city network reaches Maruyama-kōen Station for the Maruyama cafés, Bus Center-mae for Sōsei East, and Susukino and Nakajima-kōen to the south.2

Your café deserves better than a pin someone else dropped

Free listings are free for good. A featured page gives you photos, a menu and your own URL, in your café's own design, for less than a coffee a day.
