Long nights over coffee are an old habit in Beirut. In 2014 the architect Nabil Karam remembered meeting friends at the Badaro Inn coffeehouse in the early 1970s and talking until the early hours of the morning.1 From 1960 to 1990, Hamra Street's cafés were meeting rooms for journalists, politicians and artists, and after 1967 some hosted opposition groups drafting their founding statements.2
That culture faded. By 2022 Hamra's café scene, at its height in the 1960s, had largely given way to bars made for louder nights out.3 Late cafés today are spread from the corniche to Armenia Street. Hamra and Mar Mikhael have the most, and the nights are mild: the city's climate keeps both days and nights moderate, and after dark the wind turns to blow out to sea.4
Local tip: For a late coffee by the sea, Al Falamanki on Chatila Street serves until 03:30, and its Raouché terrace looks out over the rocks.5

Al Falamanki (الفلمنكي) on Chatila Street opens daily 09:00–03:30. Its owners say its food can be enjoyed at any time, day or night, and the Raouché branch, opened in June 2017 by the rocks, has a terrace over the view.5 The house style is a village in the city: cards, backgammon and Fairuz in the background.6
A short walk away, cafe lucy at No. 123 Raouché Street never closes and has Wi-Fi, air conditioning and outdoor seating.
On Board Games and Tales on Bliss Street serves 08:00–01:30, and روسّا كافيه (Rossa Café) 07:00–01:00 with outdoor seats. ملتقى السفير (Multaqa As-Safir) closes at midnight, Monday to Saturday, and Barzakh (برزخ) on Cairo Street at 22:30. Bliss Lounge and Brimm, on Madame Curie Street, are open 24 hours.
For many, these cafés replaced nights out. AFP found in 2022 that people who could no longer afford to party in the evenings relied on cafés like Barzakh for their social life, and regulars came to know each other by sight.3
Mar Mikhael turned into a hotspot for Beirut's party-goers once bars and restaurants moved into its old hardware and car-parts shops after 2010.7 Caffeine Coffee Beirut serves until 01:00, District.1080 on Armenia Street and Jacaranda on Qobayat Street until 00:00, and Living Room Beirut on Ibrahim Pasha Street until 23:00, from 09:00 Monday to Saturday and 12:00 on Sunday.
Up the hill in Achrafieh, Keif on Youssef Karam Street has Wi-Fi and serves 10:00–02:00. Badaro, south of Achrafieh, was already a district of big-name Beirut nightlife in the 1970s, before the civil war emptied it.8
In Mazraa, yasmine cafe is open 24 hours with outdoor tables, and Café عصير صقر on Bechara el-Khoury Street opens 07:00–22:00. In Jnah, cozy cafe serves 08:00–00:00 with Wi-Fi and seats outside.
A late argileh belongs outdoors: since 3 September 2012, Lebanese law has banned smoking in all closed public spaces, coffee shops included, with a US$90 fine for smokers.9
