In Oaxaca the outdoor table is often inside the building: a patio (courtyard) behind the street wall, or an azotea (flat rooftop) above it. Courtyards run through the city's architecture. In the Casa de Cortés, now the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, the rooms surround three of them, and the former monastery of Santo Domingo is built around a central courtyard with a fountain.1

The stone is part of the look. Cantera verde, a greenish building stone, has been used since at least the 16th century in temples, convents, civic buildings and houses; in June 2026 Mexico News Daily reported its recognition as a Heritage Stone by the International Union of Geological Sciences.2 The historic center, together with Monte Albán, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.1

Local tip: From June to September, pick a café with a covered patio or an indoor room to retreat to: each of those months averages 16 to 17 days with rain.1

Where these cafés are: Centro Histórico (4), Reforma & the north (1), Jalatlaco (1).

Dry months and wet months

The city sits at about 1,555 m, and its rain comes in one season. On 1991–2020 averages, January gets 2.4 mm of rain over about one day, and each month from November to February gets under 10 mm. June is the wettest, with 188.3 mm over about 17 days, and July to September each see rain on 16 to 17 days.1

The shoulder months are mixed: May averages 97.9 mm over about 10 days, and October 63.1 mm over about 8. Sunshine follows the same curve, from 282 hours in January to 162 in September. April is the hottest month, with average highs of 34.9 °C, while January nights fall to an average low of 10.3 °C.1

A roof helps in both seasons, but not every roof. At Cafébre on Manuel Bravo, the outdoor area sits under a plastic roof that one visitor found hot on a sunny day.4

A rooftop on Allende and the Alcalá walk

At Filemón y Sagrado, at Allende 218, Sprudge sent readers up the stairs to what it called rooftop heaven.3 Below it there is outdoor dining as well, though the Wi-Fi can be spotty.4 The café opens 07:00–16:00 and closes on Tuesdays.

Nearby, Macedonio Alcalá has been a pedestrian andador (walkway) since 1985. Paved in cantera verde, it runs from the Templo de Santo Domingo toward the center.5 Punto Paz, at No. 802, is on it.

Outdoor tables in Jalatlaco and Reforma

Jalatlaco, east of the centro, dates its founding to 1524, and on March 29, 2023, the federal tourism ministry named San Matías Jalatlaco a Barrio Mágico.6 Elefante café at Narciso Mendoza 204 has outdoor seating and opens at 07:30 daily, closing at 21:00 from Tuesday to Sunday and at 15:00 on Mondays.

In Reforma, north of the center, Café Claveria on Calle Flor de Cacao has outdoor tables and Wi-Fi and opens daily 08:00–20:00. Along with Elefante, it is open every day of the week.
