The Dutch breakfast is bread. Hagelslag, chocolate sprinkles on buttered bread or rusks, goes on an estimated 750,000 sandwiches a day in the Netherlands, and Venz has made its chocolate version since 1936.1 The café classic is the uitsmijter: one or two slices of bread with ham or cheese under at least two fried eggs. The name dates from 1899 and may refer to a dish eaten just before guests were thrown out at closing time.2

Pannenkoeken, thin pancakes topped with fruit, cream or syrup, and poffertjes, small buttery ones dusted with powdered sugar, complete the Dutch side of the menu.3 Brunch itself came from abroad. Time Out's 2026 roundup of Amsterdam brunch spots runs from British and Turkish to Israeli-Colombian, Indian, Australian and Kiwi kitchens, and notes that queues form around 10:00 at some places, several of them walk-in only.4

Local tip: Get to walk-in brunch places such as Little Collins or the De Pijp branch of Bakers and Roasters before 10:00, when Time Out says the queues start forming.4
