A cukiernia makes cakes and pastries, a piekarnia bakes bread, and in Warsaw plenty of both add an espresso machine and a few tables. The city’s own cake is the wuzetka: two layers of cocoa sponge with jam and whipped cream under a chocolate glaze that should set crisp.1 Its name most likely comes from the Trasa W-Z, a Warsaw through-road. The cake dates from about 1949 and the name from 1953, and in May 2023 it joined Mazovia’s list of traditional products.1

Mokotów has nearly a third of the city’s bakery cafés, with Wola, the Royal Route and Kamionek next. Their hours suit an afternoon slice more than an early breakfast: most open at 09:00 or 10:00, while Il Panificio on Żaryna, Kropka on Górnośląska and Żona Krawca on Podskarbińska start at 08:00.

Local tip: Jagodzianki arrive in July.4 Tadam! on Szanajcy opens only from Wednesday to Sunday, at 09:00, so plan a Praga visit for those days.

Pączki on Wilcza and Szanajcy

On tłusty czwartek, the doughnut day before Lent, the newer bakeries draw queues as well as the old names. For 2026, Ciastko z Dziurką at Wilcza 26 fried twelve flavors of pączek, and Tadam! at Szanajcy 11 in Praga seven.2

Ciastko z Dziurką stretches the day into a festival of several days, with fillings such as matcha with blackcurrant, passion fruit with cream and pistachio with apricot.3 Tadam!’s other long queues come in summer, for jagodzianki, yeast buns filled with wild blueberries.2

What a jagodzianka costs

Jagodzianki are a July bake.4 In a July 2022 survey of Warsaw prices, a jagodzianka cost 4.50 zł at a Społem shop in Praga-Południe, 5.70 zł at the Gromulski bakery, 14 zł at Cukiernia Stary Dom and 23 zł at Magda Gessler’s Słodki Słony.4 The filling is meant to reach the edges of the dough; whether the bun should be fluffy or thin is a matter of argument.4

Swedish buns and Italian pastries

Kaffe Bageri Stockholm at Nowolipki 13 in Muranów is a Swedish café built around fika, the coffee-and-bun break. Its bullar, sweet yeast buns scented with cinnamon and cardamom, are kneaded by hand every day and rolled in front of customers.5

La Bomboniera, at Aleja Solidarności 82 in Wola, opened in December 2014 on the model of southern Italian pastry shops, with every cake and biscuit made on site to traditional recipes; much of it is sold to take away.6 Kaiser Patisserie has two shops, at Chmielna 15 and Zajęcza 1A, and Il Panificio bakes in both Mokotów and Wola.

Cake with cats, games and late hours

Some bakery cafés double as something else. Miau Grau at Kolejowa 49A serves coffee and desserts in a room shared with resident cats, with a cupboard of board games such as Dixit and Azul.7 It opens at 07:30 on weekdays and closes at 22:00.

Canela Bakery at Chmielna 27/31 is open until 22:00 every day and has vegan options, and Stolica Cafe on Narbutta, with cakes and brunch, also serves until 22:00. In Kamionek, U Krawca Cafe at Siennicka 3 opens at 07:30 on weekdays,, and Żona Krawca on Podskarbińska stays open until 20:00 every day.
