Lisbon's bakers start long before its cafés open. At Bread & Friends on Avenida Fontes Pereira de Melo, Time Out reported in 2022, the bakery chef begins at 03:30 and the café opens at 07:30.1 The metro doesn't run until 06:30.2 Most people have breakfast at 08:00–08:30, so a café serving at 06:00 is ahead of almost everyone.3
Cafés that open by 06:00 are mostly pastelarias and neighborhood counters, and about half of them open that early on Sundays too. Specialty bars start later, at 07:30 at the soonest. First to open is Pastelaria Luso-Americana at 146 Avenida Almirante Reis, open daily from 04:00 to 02:00.
Local tip: For a sunrise viewpoint, buy your coffee before you climb. Cafés in the old center mostly open at 07:00 or later, and the kiosk at Portas do Sol opens at 09:00.
Where these cafés are: Alvalade & north (10), Arroios & Anjos (7), Avenidas Novas & Saldanha (5), Bairro Alto & Príncipe Real (1), Cais do Sodré & Santos (1), Estrela & Campo de Ourique (1).
Nothing matches those filters here. See all cafés in Lisbon.
The 06:00 starts are not in Baixa & Chiado or in Alfama, Graça & Mouraria. They cluster where people commute from: Alvalade & north has the most, then Arroios & Anjos and the Avenidas Novas. On Rua José Falcão in Arroios, Neptuno at 35–37 and O Castelhano at 36 both open at 06:00 Monday to Saturday, and Pastelaria Suzelia on Rua Cavaleiro de Oliveira opens at 06:00 on weekdays.
In the Avenidas Novas, Pérola das Laranjeiras at 204 Estrada das Laranjeiras and Nortex at 8-A Rua Engenheiro Vieira da Silva open at 06:00 Monday to Saturday.
Closer to the center, Braancafé at 22 Rua Braamcamp, near Marquês de Pombal, opens daily 06:00–22:00. On the riverfront, Sanduichita on Praça do Duque da Terceira, by Cais do Sodré station, serves from 06:00 every day, closing at 21:30 on weekdays and 20:00 at weekends.
If you are staying in the Baixa, the nearest early start is Casa das Bifanas at 6 Praça da Figueira, open Monday to Saturday from 06:30. Copélia at 120 Rua de São Lázaro opens daily at 06:30, Martinho da Arcada under the arcades of Praça do Comércio at 07:00 Monday to Saturday, Cantinho da Sé on Largo de Santo António da Sé daily at 07:00, and Hygge House on Rua dos Fanqueiros at 07:30. The grand old houses wait longer: Confeitaria Nacional on Praça da Figueira opens at 08:00.
Early counters serve a working breakfast. Ask for um café, an espresso, which you can have curto (short) or cheio (fuller); um italiano is shorter still. Some counters also pour a café com cheirinho, an espresso with a splash of bagaço, Portuguese grape brandy. For milk, um galão is milky coffee in a glass, and um garoto an espresso with a little milk foam in a cup.4 Coffee with toast or a sandwich is the standard breakfast order.3
The metro normally runs from 06:30 to 01:00, so near a station a 06:00 café is the only option before the first train.2 Pastelaria Fim de Século in Alvalade & north and Pastelaria Raio de Luz at 1-B Rua António Pereira Carrilho in Arroios also open daily at 06:00, Sundays included.
