A slaščičarna is a confectioner's shop with tables, where cake, ice cream and coffee share the counter. Most cluster in the Center and the Old Town, with family cake shops further out in Šiška and Rožna dolina.
Three Slovenian cakes are worth knowing. Kremšnita, the Bled cream cake, was created in 1953 by Ištvan Lukačević, in-house pastry chef of what is now Sava Hoteli Bled, and is served at its Kavarna Park: a 7 x 7 x 7 cm cube of two-thirds vanilla cream and one-third cream between thin sheets of pastry. About 15 million slices have been sold since, roughly 2,000 a day at Kavarna Park in high summer against 650 on an ordinary day.1
Local tip: In summer, Slaščičarna pri vodnjaku on Stari trg serves until 24:00, late enough for ice cream after dinner in the Old Town.4

Gibanica and potica
Prekmurska gibanica comes from the Prekmurje region. It layers poppy seeds, walnuts, apples, raisins and quark between sheets of dough; an 1828 account counted 10 or 11 layers, and the EU registered it as a Traditional Speciality Guaranteed in March 2010.2
Potica is a festive rolled cake of thin leavened dough, baked in a ring mold called a potičnik. Walnut is the usual filling, tarragon a traditional alternative, and Slovenska potica has held the same EU status since April 2021. The protected recipe allows five fillings: walnut, walnut with raisins, raisin, tarragon, and tarragon with cottage cheese; salted versions with cracklings or bacon exist outside it.3
Slaščičarne in the Old Town and the Center
Slaščičarna pri vodnjaku, at Stari trg 30, is known for its large choice of sweets: cakes, cream cakes, sundaes, ice-cream drinks and hot chocolate, with wholemeal, lactose-free, vegan and gluten-free sweets. It opens at 08:00 daily and closes at 22:00 in winter and 24:00 in summer.4
Kavarna in slaščičarna Leonard, on Trg mladinskih delovnih brigad, opens 07:00–19:00 every day. La Brioche Slaščičarna is at Rimska cesta 14, and Vigò, at Mačkova ulica 2, stays open until 22:00 every day.
Cake with coffee or a view
Kavarna Nebotičnik, on the 12th floor of the 1933 tower on Štefanova ulica, serves homemade cakes on the highest terrace in the city center.56 Kavarna Moderna, in the Moderna galerija, pairs specialty coffee with a short list of sweets: from 1 November 2025, a butter croissant costs €2.50, banana bread €4.40, a brownie €4.60 and gluten-free cheesecake €5.80.7
Trubar, on Trubarjeva cesta, serves cake from 07:00 until 01:00.
Family cake shops outside the center
Kavarna Čopomana, at Aljaževa ulica 4 in Šiška, is a family firm making single-portion cakes, wedding cakes and ice cream (one flavor lactose-free); it has parking and opens 09:00–20:00 on weekdays.8
Slaščičarna Galerija grad, at Rožna dolina cesta XV 14, is a family confectionery working from its grandmothers' recipes: round and rectangular cakes, cakes made to order, doughnuts, pies, truffles and ice cream.9 It opens 08:00–21:00 from Monday to Saturday. Barjan, on Dolenjska cesta, and Sorbetto, on Moskovska ulica, cover the south and east.
