Cafés with Wi-Fi cluster in the City Centre, where Bree Street alone has Café Frank, The Ladder, Rosetta Roastery's café and Neighborgood CBD. Gardens & Tamboerskloof comes next, then Observatory, and Sea Point and Woodstock have one each, on Wisbeach Road and Albert Road.

Power cuts are no longer the problem they were: by October 2026 the country had gone more than 17 months without load-shedding, the last cut ending on 16 May 2025.1 A travel writer who works from Cape Town cafés rated the Wi-Fi generally good in a guide updated in January 2026, and kept a phone hotspot as backup, paying about R200 for 50 GB of mobile data.2

Local tip: On a Sunday, Rosetta on Bree Street (08:00–14:00), Comrade Coffee in Observatory (10:00–18:00) and The Blue Cafe in Tamboerskloof (08:00–22:00) are open with Wi-Fi; Café Frank and The Ladder are closed.

Where these cafés are: City Centre & Bo-Kaap (9), Gardens & Tamboerskloof (3), Observatory & Mowbray (2), Sea Point (1), Woodstock & Salt River (1).

Bree Street and Long Street

Café Frank at 160 Bree Street opens 07:30–17:00 on weekdays and 08:30–14:00 on Saturday; The Ladder at 136 Bree opens 07:00–16:00 on weekdays and 08:00–14:30 on Saturday. Of the three, only Rosetta's café, on the corner with Shortmarket Street, opens on Sunday, from 08:00 to 14:00.

On Long Street, Lola's Cafe at 228 opens 08:00–16:30 on weekdays and 08:00–15:00 on Saturday. Café Societi at 9 Caledon Street, which has step-free access, Copacabana Cafe on Bloem Street and Motherland Coffee also have Wi-Fi, as does Truth on Buitenkant Street.

Truth's long table and other places to sit

At Truth, the front communal table seats 15 to 20 people and power sockets hang from the ceiling; it is busiest between 09:00 and 11:00.2

The same guide found plugs at the countertop tables of Ou Meul's café on Upper Orange Street in Oranjezicht, and advised picking larger, open cafés and coming early or outside the busy hours.2 Cafés fill up most in peak summer, and indoor space counts for more in winter; for calls, it suggested a quieter corner, since background music varies from café to café.2

Gardens, Observatory and Sea Point

The Blue Cafe at 13 Brownlow Road in Tamboerskloof is open until 22:00 every day, from 07:00 on weekdays and 08:00 at weekends, and has tables outside. The Conscious Kitchen at 34 Kloof Street, which has vegan dishes and takes cards, and Lazari in Vredehoek also offer Wi-Fi.

In Observatory, St James Coffee at 47 Station Road, which is smoke-free, opens 07:00–18:00 on weekdays, and Comrade Coffee at 42 Trill Road 10:00–18:00 every day. Sea Point has Naked on Wisbeach Road.

When the power went

During the load-shedding years, Wi-Fi depended on backup power. In July 2022 the owner of Bo-Kaap Deli had just spent R3,000 on emergency light bulbs, and his generator kept the coffee machine and the Wi-Fi going, although it was very noisy.3

A standard two-group espresso machine needs a generator of at least 6.5 kVA, a Stellenbosch coffee shop owner told Bolander Lifestyle in 2022; renting or buying one was too expensive for him, so he switched to plunger coffee, tea and soft drinks during cuts.4
