Spain added a visa for international remote workers in Ley 28/2022, its startups law. Holders may live in the country for up to a year while working for themselves or for employers anywhere, and foreigners already resident can apply for a permit of up to three years, renewable for two more.1
In Madrid, cafés with Wi-Fi are spread across residential districts: Chamberí and Salamanca have the most, with Retiro and Malasaña & Conde Duque close behind. Some invite laptops openly. Federal, the café on Plaza de las Comendadoras, describes itself as a place for brunch, lunch or work.2
Local tip: For an afternoon on a laptop near Atocha, Scarlett Café on Plaza del Emperador Carlos V has Wi-Fi and stays open until 21:30 every day; ask before you work through the lunch rush at smaller cafés.

Laptop rules and the right of admission
Spanish lawyers disagree on how far a café may limit laptops. Ignacio Palomar of Servilegal told Genbeta in 2024 that a café sells consumption, not office space, so its right of admission covers a laptop rule if the rule is objective, non-discriminatory and posted for customers.3
Laura Sierra of Legálitas argued that the right of admission says nothing about working on a device and only bars arbitrary or discriminatory exclusion; a customer turned away could complain to consumer authorities. Francisco Trujillo of Universitat Jaume I added that cafés are not built to ergonomic or workplace standards.3
