About six in ten Stockholm cafés close by 18:00 even on their longest day, so a late café here is one that keeps going past 22:00. In winter the evening starts early: in late December the day lasts only about six hours.1

Södermalm, long known as the home of Stockholm's bohemian and alternative culture, has the largest share of the late cafés, about a third.2 Gamla stan comes next, then Norrmalm.

Local tip: On a Sunday evening, when most cafés have shut, Fåtöljen on Götgatan stays open until midnight and Coffeehouse 72, further down the street, until 22:00.

Where these cafés are: Södermalm (8), Gamla stan (5), Norrmalm (3), Gärdet & Norra Djurgården (2), Vasastan (2), Johanneshov, Årsta & Hammarbyhöjden (1), Östermalm (1).

Götgatan and the rest of Södermalm

Götgatan runs south from Slussen to Skanstull, passing Medborgarplatsen; it has existed since the 12th century and has carried its name since the 1640s, from its place on the old Göta highway.3 Its northern stretch, Götgatsbacken, is pedestrian-only.3

Fåtöljen, at Götgatan 14, keeps the latest hours on the street: until 01:00 from Wednesday to Saturday and until midnight on the other nights. Further south, Coffeehouse 72 by Chaqwa at Götgatan 72 is open until 22:00 every day.

Elsewhere on Södermalm, Crumheaven at Högbergsgatan 38 stays open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, and Giffi at Hornsgatan 143E until 22:00 daily. À la Crepe on Katarina Bangata opens at 16:00 on weekdays and serves until 23:00 Tuesday to Saturday, while Sköldpaddsön on Bysistorget is open until 22:00 Tuesday to Saturday.

Stortorget and Gamla stan after dark

In Gamla stan two late cafés stand side by side on Stortorget, the square known for its annual Christmas market.4 Chokladkoppen at No. 18 and Kaffekoppen at No. 20 both open 10:00–22:00 every day.

A few streets away, Under Kastanjen at Kindstugatan 1 serves until 23:00 from Monday to Saturday and until 21:00 on Sundays.5 Mazzarini on Kornhamnstorg also stays open until 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, and Stockholms Gästabud on Österlånggatan until 22:00 daily.

Past midnight in the center

Three cafés in the center rival Götgatan. L'Angolo, at Engelbrektsgatan 2, is open until 02:00 Monday to Saturday; Pas d'art on Biblioteksgatan and Italiano both stay open until 01:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.

Evenings out in Stockholm often start straight from work with an "after work", the local happy hour, when people head to bars and pubs, often for slightly lower prices; Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays are the busiest days, and signs outside simply read AW with the hours.6

Vasastan and the outer districts

Mellqvist kaffebar on Rörstrandsgatan, by Sankt Eriksplan, began more than 25 years ago, when the premises was still a bakery; in the evening it now serves light dinners, snacks, beer, wine and cocktails, and it is open 365 days a year.7 It opens at 06:00 every day and stays open until 22:00 from Tuesday to Saturday. Non Solo Bar keeps similar evenings, until 22:00 Wednesday to Saturday.

Further out, Bullens at Valhallavägen 71 serves until 23:00 from Monday to Saturday, and Mare Blu in Gärdet until 22:30 most nights and 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. South of the center, Årstabo on Årsta Torg stays open until 22:00 from Wednesday to Saturday.
