Muesli is a Zurich invention. The doctor Maximilian Bircher-Benner introduced it around 1900 for the patients of his clinic, later the Lebendige Kraft sanatorium on the Zürichberg, and called it simply "d Spys", the dish.1 The original was grated whole apple with soaked rolled oats, nuts, lemon juice and either cream and honey or condensed milk; Müesli is the Swiss diminutive of Mues, a mush.1

Brunch cafés cluster in Kreis 4, which has more of them than any other district, with Hottingen-Fluntern next. Several cafés in the center serve breakfast well past noon.

Local tip: For a late Zmorge on a weekday, Kafischnaps between Wipkingen and Unterstrass serves breakfast until 16:00.4

Where these cafés are: Kreis 4 (Langstrasse) (6), Hottingen & Fluntern (3), Zürich-West (Kreis 5) (1), Seefeld (Kreis 8) (1).
