Bangkok's oldest cake has Portuguese roots. After Ayutthaya fell in 1767, King Taksin gave Portuguese settlers a neighborhood on the Thonburi bank of the Chao Phraya, Kudi Chin, where their descendants still live.1 Its khanom farang kudi chin (ขนมฝรั่งกุฎีจีน, Kudi Chin's Western cake) is a sponge of duck eggs, wheat flour and sugar, made without baking powder or yeast and topped with raisins, dried sweet gourd and sugar.2

Only three families still make it, though it is sold well beyond the neighborhood.2 Bangkok's bakery cafés are a newer layer: Thonburi & Khlong San and Sukhumvit have the most, ahead of Thonglor & Ekkamai.

Local tip: If you can't get across to Kudi Chin, look for khanom farang kudi chin at Wang Lang Market on the Thonburi bank or in Bang Lamphu, where it is also sold.

Japanese and Thai-style bakeries

Japanese bread came to Thailand as a business in 1984, when Yamazaki Baking set up a Thai subsidiary and opened its first bakery in the country.3 Some Japanese bakeries have lasted: Time Out's 2024 bakery round-up included a Japanese bakery in Phrom Phong that had been trading for more than 50 years.4

Thai-style bakeries have their veterans too. The same guide describes a bakery on Surawong Road, nearly six decades old, selling kaya bread, roll cakes and a gold butter bread at 25฿ (as of 2024), baked only 20 at a time each day.4

Sourdough in Sathorn and on Charoen Krung

Sourdough came with newer arrivals. Bartels, a Danish-Norwegian business, promises 100% sourdough made without commercial yeast and baked a little lighter than the Danish original.5 At its Suan Phlu bakery the dough ferments for two days, and as of 2024 a handmade organic loaf cost 250฿ and a double espresso 100฿.4 Bartels in Silom & Sathorn opens daily 07:00–18:00, with outdoor seats.

On Charoen Krung Road, Sarnies Sourdough bakes with French flour; in 2024 its sourdough fruit loaf cost 285฿.4 The Sarnies café in Bang Rak runs 08:00–22:00 with air-conditioning. In Ari, Landhaus bakery turns out German-style bakes, among them a 60฿ chocolate brioche bun as of 2024.4
