Chiang Mai's day starts early. Buddhist monks walk their alms rounds in the morning, since they may not eat after noon, and the city is moving well before office hours: Warorot market opens at 06:00, and Nong Buak Haad Park, the only public park inside the moat, at 05:00.12

Few cafés keep those hours, and most of those that do never close. Widen the window to 07:00 and the choice grows many times over.

Local tip: Wake Up Coffee in Si Phum, open 24 hours inside the moat, is the surest cup before a dawn walk; most other cafés start at 07:00 at the earliest.

Where these cafés are: Nimman (3), Santitham (1), Old City (1), South Chiang Mai (1), Chang Phueak & north (1).

Old-style coffee at dawn

The earliest fixed opening in the city belongs to สภากาแฟ (เจ้าเก่า) in south Chiang Mai, a name that translates loosely as "the original coffee council". It serves from 05:30 to 11:00, closes on Fridays, and offers bakes and breakfast.

Ordinary Thai coffee usually comes with condensed milk and plenty of sugar, and if you want filtered coffee rather than instant, ask for kafae thung (กาแฟถุง, "bag coffee").1 Its iced black cousin is oliang (โอเลี้ยง), from the Teochew for "black and iced": robusta ground with roasted grains or seeds such as corn, soybeans, rice and sesame, sweetened and steeped through a cloth sock.3 Thais class it as kafae boran (กาแฟโบราณ, "old-style coffee"); the hot version is called oyua.4

Bakeries and 24-hour counters

Nana Bakery, at 3 Sot Suksa Road in Santitham, opens at 06:00 every day and closes at 17:00. It is one of the few cafés to start at 06:00 without staying open around the clock.

For coffee in the small hours, Wake Up Coffee has two branches open 24 hours, one in Si Phum subdistrict inside the moat and one at 99/89-90 Moo 1, Chang Phueak. In Nimman, Wide-awake 24 hours and Camellia & Co. never close either.

Breakfast before the heat

The local breakfast to pair with an early coffee is jok (โจ๊ก, rice porridge), often eaten in the morning with a raw or soft egg stirred in and topped with minced pork, ginger or pathongko, a small fried dough stick; it is most popular in the cool season.5

Inside the moat, Nong Buak Haad Park on Arak Road is where locals jog, do yoga and play sepak takra in the mornings and evenings, and it has a café of its own.2

The case for an early start is strongest from March to June, when April afternoons average 36.7°C. In the cool season, November to February, January lows average 15.7°C.2

Where the 07:00 openers are

Of the cafés open by 07:00, the Old City has about a third and Nimman a quarter, and the east bank of the Ping comes next. GRASP 1981 Espresso Bar on Ratvithi Road, Bella Goose Coffee on Sridonchai Road, Fellowship Cafe & Co-working on the Chiang Mai–Lamphun Road and Basecamp trail cafe near Suthep all start at 07:00.

If you meet monks on their round, remember that genuine monks collect only food and do not accept or touch money; a robed figure asking for cash is an impostor.1

FAQ

Open by 6am in Chiang Mai: questions

Which cafés in Chiang Mai are open by 6am?

สภากาแฟ (เจ้าเก่า) in south Chiang Mai opens at 05:30 (closed Fridays) and Nana Bakery on Sot Suksa Road at 06:00, while Wake Up Coffee's two branches, Wide-awake 24 hours and Camellia & Co. are open around the clock. Many more Chiang Mai cafés open by 07:00.

What is oliang, the old-style Thai coffee found in Chiang Mai?

Oliang is Thai black iced coffee; the name comes from Teochew for "black and iced". It is made from robusta ground with roasted grains or seeds such as corn, soybeans, rice and sesame, sweetened and steeped through a cloth sock, and is classed as kafae boran, old-style coffee. The hot version is called oyua.

When do monks collect alms in Chiang Mai, and what should visitors know?

Monks in Chiang Mai, as elsewhere in Thailand, walk their alms rounds in the morning, because they may not eat after noon. Genuine monks collect only food and neither accept nor touch money, so a robed figure asking for cash is an impostor. Warorot market opens at 06:00 if you want to buy food to offer.
