Working from a Chiang Rai café is easy on the connection. When the Chiang Rai Times tested laptop cafés in October 2025, download speeds ran from 30–60 Mbps at Doi Chaang Café near the clock tower to 80–150 Mbps at The Roastery by Roj, and several had no posted time limit.1
The area around the clock tower has the most Wi-Fi cafés, followed by Rop Wiang, with a few by the Kok River. Air-conditioning matters as much as speed in the hot months, and Fallen Fruit, Cafe number Ei8ht, Akha Hill and 1:2 at Kad Luang all have it.
Local tip: Arrive at The Roastery by Roj around 10:30, at the start of one of its quieter stretches, and take a seat by a floor-level outlet; it opens at 08:00 and is closed on Mondays.
Where these cafés are: Clock Tower & Night Bazaar (14), Rop Wiang (8), Kok River & Rim Kok (5).

The Roastery by Roj had the most outlets in the test, at wall and floor level, with uploads of 70–120 Mbps, and its quietest stretches were 10:30–12:00 and 14:30–16:30.1 Doi Chaang Café had fewer outlets but air-conditioning, and was quietest from 08:00 to 10:00 and again from 16:00 to 18:00.1 Concept Yard Chiangrai, in the middle of town, measured 70–120 Mbps.1
Speeds were measured roughly between 10:00 and 17:00 and change with the time of day and network load. For HD video calls, the same guide suggests at least 10 Mbps down and 5 Mbps up.1
Order something every one to two hours, ask before moving chairs, and take calls on headphones.1 Carry a short power strip and sit near a wall if you need power, use a VPN on public Wi-Fi, and keep a Thai SIM as a backup connection.1 Download the files you need beforehand, in case the network drops.1
Nobody expects a tip for a long stay. Thais rarely tip, and a service charge, where a café adds one, takes the place of a tip; if you do leave something, the usual advice is to keep it under 50฿.2
Near the clock tower, 1055 brewing at corner on Sanambin Road opens 07:30–17:00 with outdoor tables and air-conditioning, Akha Hill opens at 07:00, and 1:2 at Kad Luang, the big market, keeps 08:00–17:00 from Monday to Saturday. บุหงา ตานี Cafe' & Bistro, at 162 Banphaprakan Road, has outdoor seating and opens 10:00–19:00 except on Sundays.
By the Kok River, Bundarnjai, at 353/2 Rim Nam Kok Road, combines coffee, food and bingsu, Korean shaved ice, and opens 09:00–18:00 daily. In Rop Wiang, Café de Mow is open 08:00–20:00 and One Café 09:00–18:00. Cafe number Ei8ht, which is air-conditioned, and ดามา คาเฟ่ เชียงราย, at 353/1 Soi Tha Phae, are the other Wi-Fi cafés near the river.
Few Wi-Fi cafés stay open after dark. Sound Brown Coffee near the clock tower and Kane Car Care & Cafe in Rop Wiang both run until 23:00, and Yoddoi Coffee & Tea serves until 21:00.
Fire smoke across northern Thailand builds through February, peaks in March and clears by May as the rains arrive, the weeks to work behind closed doors.3
