Late coffee in Chicago usually comes attached to something else: a Serbian restaurant, a Greek bakery, a board-game room or a wine bar. The West Loop has the most cafés that stay open into the evening, followed by Uptown and Andersonville, River North and Lincoln Square, and most of them close at 22:00 or 23:00 rather than midnight.
The newest evening scene is on the Northwest Side. In the year to January 2026, four Middle Eastern-style cafés opened along a mile of Kedzie Avenue in Albany Park and North Park, serving spiced light-roast coffee, strong tea and desserts with nuts and honey.1 They work as alcohol-free places to meet after dinner and fill up after sunset during Ramadan.1
Local tip: After midnight the Red and Blue lines are the trains still running; Artopolis on Halsted Street, a short walk from UIC-Halsted on the Blue Line, serves until 01:00 on Friday and Saturday.9
