Uruguay wired itself early. Plan Ceibal, launched by decree in April 2007, handed out about 450,000 laptops, and by October 2009 every primary-school child and teacher in the country had one.1 The state telecom Antel began running fiber to the home in Montevideo in 2012, and its fiber network covers most of the city.23

Wi-Fi is available in shopping malls, on bus lines and in most businesses, so the connection is rarely what limits a work session; opening hours are.3 Centro and Cordón and the Ciudad Vieja have the most cafés with Wi-Fi, ahead of Parque Rodó, and most of them close by 20:00 and stay shut on Sundays.

Where these cafés are: Ciudad Vieja (5), Centro & Cordón (5), Parque Rodó (3), Punta Carretas (1), Buceo (1), Pocitos (1).

Farmacia Café at Cerrito 550 opened in 2017 in the old Deli pharmacy and keeps traces of the shop's interior; its founder Martín Chamyan also runs La Madriguera.5 It opens weekdays 08:00–19:00 and Saturdays 09:00–19:00. The Lab Coffee Roasters at Sarandí 285 and Tropical Smoothie at Buenos Aires 614 also have Wi-Fi.

Parque Rodó: books and coffee

Escaramuza at Doctor Pablo de María 1185 is a bookstore, restaurant and coffee shop run by the team behind La Huella. In 2017 it pulled ristrettos and espressos on a Faema E61 with beans from MVD Roasters and served cappuccinos with house-made alfajores.6 It opens Monday to Saturday 09:00–21:00.

1.14 Uno Catorce Cafe at Joaquín de Salterain 1252 runs Monday to Saturday 09:00–20:00. El Faro, at Julio Herrera y Reissig 633, has Wi-Fi and smoke-free outdoor tables.

Pocitos, Punta Carretas and Buceo

If a café connection drops, mobile data is a reasonable fallback: in 2022 Uruguay had the second-highest mobile penetration in Latin America, after Panama.3
