Adelaide has a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters, and the airport logs about 2,762 hours of sunshine a year.1 Outdoor tables work for most of the year, but summer has its limits: the summer of 2013–2014 brought a record 13 days above 40 °C.1
The CBD has the most cafés with outdoor seating, followed by Burnside and Kensington, the East End, and Goodwood and Wayville. Most are morning places: about half open by 07:00 on weekdays and more than half stop serving by 15:00, while about two-thirds open on Sunday.
Local tip: Choose King William Road for outdoor coffee in any season: its deciduous trees shade the tables in summer and drop their leaves for winter sun.6
Where these cafés are: CBD (15), Burnside, Kensington & Rose Park (9), Goodwood & Wayville (8), East End (8), Norwood (6), Kent Town (6), Inner south (6), North Adelaide (4), Unley & Hyde Park (4), Western suburbs (4), St Peters, Stepney & Walkerville (4), Bowden & Hindmarsh (4), Thebarton & Mile End (3), Prospect (3), Glenelg (3).

January highs average 28.6 °C at the airport and 30.0 °C at Kent Town, beside the city center, and June is the wettest month, with about 80 mm of rain at the airport.1 From the first Sunday in October, daylight saving moves the clocks to UTC+10:30, so summer evenings stay light late.2
On a hot day, take the early table. White Picket, at 10 Stuart Road in Burnside, opens at 06:15 Monday to Saturday, and Pickle In The Middle on Unley Road starts at 06:30 every day.
Peter Rabbit, behind gates on Hindley Street, has a garden, a shipping-container kitchen and a deck.3 Whistle & Flute on Greenhill Road is a café and bar built around a planted courtyard, and Bloom in Thebarton sits in an old tram barn by the river among ghost gums.43
In Kent Town, Tell Henry moved back in 2022 to a Rundle Street site with plenty of outside seating.5 The Gator Club on Payneham Road and Homeland on King William Street, both nearby, also put tables outside.
King William Road in Hyde Park was replanted with more than 70 deciduous street trees in 2019, chosen to shade the footpaths in summer and let light through in winter.6 He Said She Said and Unley Social are among the cafés with tables outside. In the East End, Exchange on Vardon Avenue, Loaded Corner Cafe on East Terrace and Carton Deli on Pulteney Street all have outdoor seats.
On The Parade in Norwood, Eccomi and Uncle Albert's Cafe have outdoor seating. Goodwood Road has its own run, with Ginger's Coffee Studio at 109, Trouble & Strife at 123 and Hey George at 157, and in Burnside, Lockwood General at 35 High Street opens daily, from 07:00 on weekdays.
About 700 hectares of Light's Park Lands remain, wrapped around the city center and North Adelaide in a figure-eight along both banks of the Torrens.7 Rymill Park, known in Kaurna as Murlawirrapurka and named after Sir Arthur Rymill, Lord Mayor from 1950 to 1953, has a lake with the Colada Lakeside Kiosk on its shore.7
Simpson Kiosk, near the East End, and Fare and Square on Wellington Square in North Adelaide also serve coffee outdoors, and by the sea, Broadway Kiosk in Glenelg has outdoor tables.
