Sydney's café day starts early and ends early. Most cafés that open by 06:00 close again by 16:00. Bondi & Bronte has the most early starters, well ahead of Marrickville & Petersham and CBD & The Rocks, with Darlinghurst, Alexandria, Annandale and Newtown close behind.

How dark 06:00 is depends on the season. New South Wales moves its clocks forward one hour on 4 October 2026 and back on 4 April 2027.1 Sunrise comes as early as 05:37 in early December, under daylight saving, and as late as about 07:00 at the end of June.23

Local tip: On a Sunday, skip the CBD for an early coffee: Shuk in Elizabeth Bay, Baffi & Mo Espresso in Redfern & Waterloo and Phono Stage in Balmain all open at 06:00 every day.

The 04:00 and 05:00 starts

Tommy Black at 4 Burrows Avenue opens first: 04:00 on weekdays, 04:30 on Saturday and 05:30 on Sunday, and it closes by 14:00. A group of others open at 05:00, among them Double Roasters on Victoria Road in Marrickville (Monday to Saturday), Chapter Five Espresso in Redfern & Waterloo, Matty & John's Espresso Bar in Newtown & Erskineville and Café Jack's in Kensington & Randwick.

At 05:30, Fez & Co. at 4 Booth Street, Annandale, opens every day and stays open until 17:00, later than most early cafés. Recharging at 10 Johnston Street opens at the same hour Monday to Saturday, and Cafe Abercrombie starts at 05:00 six days a week.

Botany Road's industrial hours

The early starts along Botany Road belong to a strip with an industrial past. Alexandria became dominated by manufacturing and engineering in the 20th century, and by 1943 about 550 companies there made goods ranging from bricks to aeroplanes.4

The Coffee Roaster at 380 Botany Road opens at 05:00 on weekdays and 06:00 at weekends, Taste Texture at 358 starts at 05:30 Monday to Friday, and Little Me Coffee at 693A opens at 06:00 Monday to Saturday. In the same part of the city, Eat Me Espresso Bar opens at 05:00 on weekdays, and Mentmore & Morley at 55 Mentmore Avenue and Social Society at 7 Ebsworth Street both open at 06:00 every day.

CBD: weekday mornings only

In the city center, early cafés are built around office hours. Two in three of the early starters in CBD & The Rocks don't trade on Sundays, and Lime Sandwich and Espresso Bar, Batch, Kingswood Coffee on Underwood Street and June's Shoppe open Monday to Friday only. BrewBros at 46A Druitt Street is the exception, opening at 05:30 on Saturday and 07:00 on Sunday.

The office week itself is uneven. Figures reported by Time Out in July 2024 put CBD foot traffic on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 84% and 83% of pre-pandemic levels, but on Fridays at just 60%.5 Marino Plagiotis, owner of Hungry Bean Cafe, dropped quiet Monday and Friday trading for late nights and weekends, telling The Greek Herald in June 2024: "The corporate sector is not coming back five days a week, it's really more three days."6

Weekend mornings

Weekends start later almost everywhere. Nearly a quarter of the early starters close on Sundays, and many that open at 05:00 or 06:00 on weekdays wait until 07:00 on Saturday and Sunday, among them Algorithm, Milk Crate and Vesbar Espresso Marrickville.

A few keep the same hour seven days a week. Shuk at 61–69 Roslyn Gardens, Baffi & Mo Espresso and Phono Stage at 13 Beattie Street, Balmain, all open at 06:00 daily, and The Twelve Cafe in Newtown & Erskineville opens at 06:00 on Saturday and Sunday as well as weekdays.
