Phnom Penh eats breakfast early. Pork-and-rice stalls light their grills soon after dawn, start serving around 06:00 and are often sold out by 09:00.1 The dish, bai sach chrouk (បាយសាច់ជ្រូក, rice and pork), is thin-sliced pork marinated in palm sugar, garlic, coconut milk and fish sauce, served with rice, a side of chicken broth, radishes and fried onions.2

Early is also the cooler part of the day. Temperatures here typically range from 22 °C to 35 °C, and in the dry season, December to April, nights can drop to about 22 °C.3

Local tip: Pair the 06:00 coffee with breakfast nearby: pork-and-rice stalls start serving around then and are often sold out by 09:00, so look for one where the grill is still smoking.

Dawn at the Olympic Stadium and on the quay

World Travel Guide suggests getting up before sunrise to join thousands of locals doing aerobics at the Olympic Stadium, then heading to Sisowath Quay just after sunrise to watch the boats and the morning exercises set to music along the waterfront.4 It recommends a plate of bai sach chrouk after the workout.4 Pork-and-rice eateries are at their busiest from 06:00 to 08:00, and the surest sign of a good vendor is a barbecue that is still smoking.6

Coffee is part of the same routine. VICE found coffee vendors on practically every street corner in 2015, with retirees meeting at stalls mid-morning to talk politics and read the newspaper.5 Many drinkers pour jasmine tea over the grounds once the coffee is finished, to clean the palate.5

The earliest openers: 04:00 and 05:00

The earliest start belongs to កាហ្វេ ឧកញ៉ាទេពផន, a coffee shop on Oknha Tep Phan Street (182) in Teuk Laak that opens daily at 04:00 and closes at 16:00, with outdoor seats and a brunch menu. In Toul Tom Poung, កាហ្វេ តារិន at 214 Street 478 keeps morning-only hours, 05:00–10:00, so by mid-morning it has already shut.

Early openers are spread across the city rather than packed into one district; Tonle Bassac and Daun Penh have a few more than elsewhere.

Cafés that open at 06:00

In the center, Cam Cup Café on Preah Ang Nonn Street (102) opens at 06:00 and stays open until 20:00, Srey Pov Coffee Shop on Street 86 until 16:00, and Happy Cafe 1 on Norodom Boulevard (41) until 18:00. Norry Cafe on Nehru Boulevard (215) and Well Coffee on Street 109, both in 7 Makara, run 06:00–20:00. ដើមកាហ្វេ on Preah Chey Chesda Street (118) in Teuk Laak serves from 06:00 to 17:00.

Further out, The Coffee Tree in Sen Sok opens 06:00–19:00, La Croisette on Street 566 in Toul Kork until 20:30, and Lumhor Coffee and Eatery on Hai Tech street in Chbar Ampov until 18:00, with outdoor tables. Kilik Bakery & Cafè near the Russian Market also unlocks at 06:00.

Some never close: 365 Coffee on Street 484 and Kongfu, both in Tonle Bassac, M Cafe in Daun Penh and RUPP Blend Cafe in Toul Kork are open 24 hours, so a coffee before dawn is always possible.
