Late-Night Cafés in Cairo: Past Midnight and Open 24 Hours

Tea is Cairo's late drink: coffee belongs to the morning, while tea is drunk at sunset and on into the night.¹ Since 26 April 2026 the national rules let restaurants and cafés trade from 05:00 to 01:00, with delivery and takeaway allowed at any hour.²

Maadi has the most cafés open late, followed by Zamalek and Downtown, while Mohandessin and Dokki have the most that never close. Most of them close between 22:00 and 01:00, and the main clusters are Road 9 and Street 233 in Maadi; a few post hours that run past 01:00, up to 03:00.

Local tip: For a late glass of tea downtown, Al Horreya in Bab el-Louq stays open until 03:00; on Islamic holidays it serves no alcohol.⁴

The spring of early closing

For a month in 2026 Cairo's nights were shorter. From 28 March, as an energy-saving measure, shops, malls, restaurants and cafés had to close at 21:00, and at 22:00 on Thursdays and Fridays; violators faced fines of up to E£20,000 under the 2019 Shops Law.³ Pharmacies, bakeries and supermarkets were exempt then, and they still trade without restrictions.³²

The cabinet ended the rule on 26 April. Shops and malls now close at 23:00, or at midnight on Thursdays, Fridays and public holidays, two hours before the cafés.²

After midnight: Downtown, Maadi and Heliopolis

Al Horreya in Bab el-Louq posts the latest hours of Downtown's old cafés, 06:00 to 03:00; it is a bar too, and stops serving alcohol on Islamic holidays.⁴ Both Groppi branches stay open until 01:00, and Expresso runs 24 hours with outdoor tables.

In Maadi, Rustic on Road 9 opens until 02:00, Rouh at 4 Road 9 and Zen Specialty Coffee on Street 233 until 01:00, and El Qahwa Khan, Huff Board Game Café and Breadfast Coffee until midnight. OH! Coffee on Street 232 stays open until midnight on weekdays, and Self on Street 254 until 23:00 on Thursdays and Fridays. Heliopolis has Quadro Cafe on Abd El-Aziz Fahmy Street and The Location on Asmaa Zaghloul Street, both open 09:00 to 02:00.

Zamalek until midnight

Zamalek's late cafés are mostly bakeries and breakfast places that keep going into the evening. Fornalia, an artisan bakery on Mohamed al-Marashly Street, opens 08:00 to 01:00. Auntie Loulou on Ahmed Heshmat Street and Antique Khana run until midnight, as does Gramophone on Kamel Mohamed Street from 09:00; Granita closes at 23:00 on weekdays and Holm Café at 22:30.

In Mohandessin and Dokki, Location Cafe on Gameat al-Dewal al-Arabiya Street, al-Mastaba (المصطبه) on Mohamed Saleh Street and Qahwet al-Moallem Ahmed Younes on Fouad Mohie el-Din Square never close. Maadi has WANTED on Street 233 and Hara 8 on Degla Square, and Giza has Ziznia on Murad Street.

Lifeguard in Mohandessin, Partido on Abd El-Latif Hamza Street in Nasr City and Dopamine on Maahad al-Gezira Street in Mokattam open until 02:00; Dopamine closes on Wednesdays. Downtown, Crafted Home on Adly Street serves until 22:00, and Room Art Space in Garden City until 23:00.
