Specialty coffee in Cairo grew up against a very different cup. Traditional qahwa was thick and sludgy, either spiced with cardamom or left bitter, poured from a kanaka into small glasses and ordered by voice, with no menu.1 Dancing Bean, a roaster that started in Australia, brought its business to Egypt in 2012 and calls itself the country's first specialty roaster.2

Zamalek holds the biggest cluster of specialty bars, about half, a few streets apart on Gezira Island. The rest are split between Heliopolis and Maadi, with one each in Mokattam and Shubra.

Local tip: Ask Amor Perfecto's baristas on Salah El-Deen Street to help you choose a cup, then buy the same beans to take home.5

Where these cafés are: Zamalek (8), Heliopolis (Masr El Gedida) (2), Maadi (2), Mokattam (1), Shubra (1).

What a cup costs, and why it hasn't dropped

A regular cappuccino ran from E£35 to E£150 in Cairo cafés in October 2026.7 Global green coffee prices eased in 2026 on a projected Brazilian crop of about 76 million bags, but Egyptian roasters treated the drop as a chance to rebuild balance sheets hurt by currency volatility and logistics bottlenecks, not as room for price cuts.8

Hussein Bahgat, founder of the roaster Ritual Coffee, estimated that a 10–20% fall in world prices would give roasters only 6–8% relief at wholesale.8 Egypt's green-coffee market has its own pricing: when world prices fall sharply, local suppliers often hold stock rather than sell at a loss, which can push local prices up.8 In 2025 US tariffs on Brazilian coffee briefly reached 50%, another risk he expects could return.8

Brewing at home

Home brewing is growing, and roasters plan more consumer workshops.8 The Egyptian writer Aly Khattab brews with a V60, a coffee scale and drip bags, where his grandfather used an ibrik, a small stovetop pot.1

For beans, Amor Perfecto sells its coffee in Zamalek, and Dancing Bean roasts to order; its shop opens Saturday to Thursday, 10:00 to 16:00.52
