A café de spécialité (specialty coffee shop) serves beans that score 80 points or more on the 100-point cupping form of the Specialty Coffee Association; the importer Erna Knutsen first used the term in 1974.1 In Lyon the label covers roasters that sell bags over the counter, brunch rooms and a station kiosk. The Pentes below the Croix-Rousse have the most of them, with Jean Macé, the Presqu'île and Part-Dieu next.
2foodtrippers counts Slake, opened in 2015, among the original specialty shops in the city, pouring beans from Mokxa and Kaffa; its second bar, on Rue de la Platière, followed in 2017 and is known for a charcoal latte and a Sunday brunch that needs a booking.2 The same site credits Mokxa with championing specialty coffee in Lyon since 2011 and notes that it roasts in Lyon and in Strasbourg.2
Local tip: Off an early TGV at Part-Dieu, Donnant in Hall 1 opens at 05:30 from Monday to Saturday, with a flat white at €4.75 as of October 2026.11

In Vaise, Torréfaction Papillons roasts on site at 20 Grande Rue de Vaise. Charlotte, its roaster, buys mostly through cooperative projects with women producers, and the shop grinds to order for a moka pot, an AeroPress, a V60 or a French press.3 It opens 09:00–19:00 Tuesday to Saturday, runs workshops, and as of October 2026 sells its Colombian decaf, La Leona, at €15 for 250 g.3
On the Croix-Rousse plateau, Jaune Cerise stocks 18 roasted coffees next to teas, infusions and Bonnat chocolate.4 Bongoo Café sells its own Torréfaction Lyonnaise Artisanale beans from two shops, on Rue Duguesclin in the 6th and Avenue Jean Jaurès in the 7th, and publishes brewing guides for the Chemex and the Hario V60.5 At Mokxa's boutique on Rue Bellecordière, order the trio of espresso, cappuccino and filter to compare one bean three ways.2
Kiwa, at 3 Quai Antoine Riboud near the Confluence river-shuttle stop, is a Korean coffee shop opened in 2020 by Gregory Trouillet and his Korean wife; kiwa means roof.6 Its pistachio, black sesame and chestnut lattes use house-made creams over a Brazil and Ethiopia blend developed with the French roaster Extrait, and bingsu, Korean shaved ice, is on the menu.6 It opens daily, 10:00–19:30.
Magma, on Rue Béchevelin, names Stumptown in New York as an influence, brews on La Marzocco machines and has hosted People Possession and Tisserie among its monthly guest roasters.6 Farther along the 7th, Café Noon on Rue Simone de Beauvoir was shaped by its founders' time in Australia and cooks with Asian, Mediterranean and European influences.7 Palmarosa, on Avenue Jean Jaurès, closes on Sundays and Mondays.
Un Brin de Folie, on Place Tobie Robatel, is a florist that has run a café since 2018, serving specialty lattes, chai and mocaccino among seasonal French-grown flowers.8 Papé, on Rue Louis Vitet, calls itself a hybrid café: specialty coffee and pastries in the morning, sandwiches and brunch at midday, and DJ sets or tastings on some evenings.9
Fika, on Rue Fernand Rey, roasts its own beans under the Fikaroasters name and serves breakfast and brunch every day of the week.10 Zeitgeist Café and La Boîte à Café are a few streets away, and Les Éclaireurs serves specialty coffee inside the Musée des Beaux-Arts on Place des Terreaux.
At Part-Dieu station, Donnant's kiosk in Hall 1, by platforms G and H, opens at 05:30 Monday to Saturday and 06:30 on Sundays. As of October 2026 it charges €2.80 for an espresso, €4.75 for a flat white and €4.95 for a 20 cl cappuccino.11 Its organic, fair-trade blend is about half Peruvian, and all profits go to the MG Le Moël foundation.11
Some bars pour coffee roasted outside Lyon. Kalia Café on Rue Mazenod, run by the trained pastry chef Florence and Claire-Lise, buys from Fleurs de Café in Vienne, and Le Café imaginaire in Monplaisir from Labelle Brûlerie in Villeurbanne.1213
Hours are daytime only. Kalia opens at 07:30 but on weekdays alone, Mill Factory in Vieux Lyon is shut on Mondays but opens on Sundays, and Bongoo and Le Café imaginaire open Tuesday to Saturday. On a Sunday, Slake on Rue de l'Ancienne Préfecture is open 08:00–18:00, Sãba near Place Guichard from 09:00, and Kiwa and La Boîte à Café from 10:00.
