The French call the first meal of the day petit déjeuner, a name that took hold across most of France in the 19th century, while Belgium, Switzerland and Canada kept plain déjeuner.1 The classic version is sweet: a hot drink and tartines (slices of bread with butter, jam or honey), with viennoiseries such as croissants, brioches and pains au chocolat added mainly on holidays.1

In 19th-century Paris, café au lait alone made up the morning meal for half the city.1 Brunch, a contraction of breakfast and lunch, came from the United States and has become a fixture of the Parisian weekend, above all on Sundays.2 A 2024 ranking by the language app Italki named Paris the world's brunch capital, counting 1,676 brunch spots, or 7.74 per 10,000 residents.3

Local tip: Book Sunday brunch ahead, or arrive after 13:00, when the first rush has thinned and tables free up without a reservation.2

What brunch costs and when to book

A Paris brunch usually brings hot drinks, fruit juice, viennoiseries, toast and eggs.2 Italki put the average brunch for two at about £63, roughly €75, in 2024, one of the highest in its ranking, while Paris je t'aime points to budget formulas at about €20 all-inclusive on quieter days (as of 2026).23

Brunch has a rush hour. Paris je t'aime advises calling ahead and notes that late risers can often find a table without booking once the 13:00 peak has passed; some places also serve brunch on weekdays.2

Where the brunch cafés are

Opéra & SoPi has the most brunch cafés, with Batignolles, the Latin Quarter, the Marais and Oberkampf & Bastille level behind it. In Batignolles, La Gazette des Batignolles is at 7 Rue des Moines, Café Fluo on Rue Lemercier opens only on Saturdays and Sundays, 09:00–17:00, and Caducée serves from Tuesday to Sunday, 08:30–17:30.

In SoPi, look for Jovia at 5 Rue Bourdaloue and Bo Man Café on Rue La Bruyère; Lactem Café on Rue du Faubourg Montmartre serves on weekdays only. In the Latin Quarter, Jozi Brunch Pantheon is on Rue Valette and Brunch aux olives at 57 Rue Galande opens daily 09:00–17:00. In the Marais, Café Abel on Rue de l'Hôtel Saint-Paul serves 09:00–18:00 every day.

Pancakes, tea rooms and grand cafés

Some coffee bars double as brunch kitchens. Holybelly on Rue Lucien Sampaix, by the Canal Saint-Martin, serves pancakes that the food writers of 2foodtrippers rank among the best they have had outside America, with coffee from Brûlerie Belleville and The Barn; they advise arriving early.4 In Belleville, Café Pimpin 20 on Rue des Panoyaux serves brunch from 08:30 Tuesday to Friday and from 11:00 at weekends.

For a grander setting, Paris je t'aime suggests Les Deux Magots, founded in 1884, at 6 Place Saint-Germain-des-Prés.2

Breakfast hours and early kitchens

Brunch kitchens keep daytime hours, and many close by mid-afternoon: Jovia at 15:00 from Monday to Thursday, Culotée Boétie on Rue de Miromesnil at 15:30 on weekdays, 5 Pailles on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis at 16:00 on weekdays and Jozi Brunch Pantheon at 16:30. Several close on Mondays, including Caducée, Café Pimpin 20 on Rue des Panoyaux and Fu Pâtisserie on Avenue de Choisy.

For an early petit déjeuner, the brasseries start sooner. La Gazette des Batignolles on Rue des Moines opens at 07:00 on weekdays, Le Saint-Régis on Rue Jean du Bellay at 07:30 every day and Les Facultés at 110 Rue d'Assas at 07:30 from Monday to Friday. Le Saint-Régis then stays open until 02:00.
