Closing time for a Paris café is set by the police, not the owner. A Préfecture de police order of 17 June 2008 fixed a nightly closing window from 02:00 to 05:00 for bars and cafés, and later hours need an exemption granted case by case, which can be withdrawn.1 Late cafés tend to run right up to that line: about half close after midnight, most of those at 02:00.
Many of them open for breakfast too, so one zinc covers the first coffee and the last glass. Café des Phares on Place de la Bastille runs 07:00–02:00 every day, À la ville d'Épinal on Rue d'Alsace 06:00–02:30, and Le Compas on Rue Montorgueil 06:00–02:00.
Local tip: On a weeknight, look up your Noctilien route before ordering the last drink: the final métro reaches the terminus around 01:15 and passes central stations up to 25 minutes earlier.4

A few cafés hold on later. La Porte Montmartre at 178 Rue Montmartre is open daily 07:00–05:00, and Café République in the Marais stays open until 04:00 on Fridays and 05:00 on Saturdays. Le Nemours on Place Colette in the 1er serves until 03:00, and Le Miami at 2 Rue Émile Faguet in the 14e until 04:00 from Friday to Sunday.
Others start late and finish late: De Voltaire À Rousseau in the 1er opens at 17:30 and runs until 05:00 six nights a week. Such hours depend on exemptions the police grant on a revocable basis, so they can change from one year to the next.1
Oberkampf & Bastille has the most late cafés, ahead of Gare de Lyon & Bercy and the Latin Quarter; Rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, Boulevard Diderot and Rue de Charonne each have several. Café des Phares, on the square, is where Marc Sautet and friends started the café philo (public philosophy debate) in 1992, and its Sunday sessions are open to anyone.2
In Montmartre, Café des 2 Moulins on Rue Lepic, Amélie's workplace in the 2001 film, serves until 02:00 every night; the tobacco counter seen in the film was removed in 2002.3 On the Left Bank, Bar du Marché at 73 Rue de Seine is open daily until 02:00, and À la Bon'heure on Rue des Fossés Saint-Bernard keeps the same closing time every day, opening at 15:00 on Sundays.
The week is uneven. Café des Mousquétaires on Rue Saint-Antoine stays open until 02:00 only from Monday to Friday, Café Caumartin near Opéra closes on Sundays, and Le Cardinal Saint-Germain on Boulevard Saint-Germain rests on Mondays. Café République drops back to midnight on Sundays.
Places that keep one closing time all week are the safer bet on a Sunday: Café des 2 Moulins, Bar du Marché, Café des Phares and La Porte Montmartre all hold their usual hours seven nights a week.
The métro stops before the cafés do. Trains reach the end of each line around 01:15 from Sunday to Thursday and around 02:15 on Friday and Saturday nights and on the eve of public holidays, and they pass central stations 15 to 25 minutes earlier.4
After that, Noctilien night buses run from 00:30 to 05:30, every 15 to 30 minutes on lines inside Paris.4 Vélib' bikes can be rented around the clock through the app for about €1 per 30 minutes, and a taxi ride costs at least €7.30, plus night or booking supplements of €4 to €7 (as of 2026).4

Most Paris cafés that open late close at 02:00. A 2008 Préfecture de police order set a nightly closing window from 02:00 to 05:00, and staying open later needs a case-by-case exemption that can be revoked. A few cafés hold one: La Porte Montmartre on Rue Montmartre is open until 05:00 every night.
