Osaka's public network, Osaka Free Wi-Fi, has been running since January 2014. It was set up by a committee of the prefecture, the city, the regional transport bureau and private companies, with the Osaka Convention & Tourism Bureau as its secretariat, and its main users have been foreign travelers and other tourists.1

Finding a connection is less of a worry for visitors than it once was. In the Japan Tourism Agency's airport survey for fiscal 2023, 9.6% of foreign travelers named free Wi-Fi as a problem on their trip, down from 18.7% in fiscal 2018.4

Local tip: Register for Osaka Free Wi-Fi OpenRoaming at Kansai Airport or Shin-Ōsaka Station on arrival; after that your phone joins compatible hotspots by itself, so you rarely need to ask a café for its password.13

Osaka Free Wi-Fi and OpenRoaming

The network shrank before it grew. Free Wi-Fi inside Osaka Metro, Kintetsu, Keihan and Nankai stations ended on March 31, 2023, when NTT Docomo withdrew the station equipment it ran on, though spots in facilities outside stations stayed on.2

On October 1, 2024, the bureau and the operator Wi2 launched Osaka Free Wi-Fi OpenRoaming, starting at Kansai Airport, Shin-Ōsaka Station and stations on the route to the Expo site, with plans to move about 3,000 existing spots in the prefecture onto it. It runs in five languages and can be reconnected as often as you like.1 You register once, and from then on your phone joins OpenRoaming hotspots on its own, in Osaka and elsewhere in Japan and abroad.3

Where cafés with Wi-Fi are

Namba, Dōtonbori & Nipponbashi has the most cafés with Wi-Fi, ahead of Umeda & Kita and Shinsaibashi, Amerikamura & Horie. On Dōtonbori, 純喫茶アメリカン (Junkissa American) has been at 道頓堀1丁目 7-4 since 1946, in a two-floor room with chandeliers.7 In Nipponbashi, 茶庭 仁 (Chatei Jin) is at 日本橋五丁目 7-20.

In Nishi-Shinsaibashi, OK Coffee is on the ground floor of the APA Hotel at 2-14-8, open daily 11:00–20:00. North of the river, GARB MONAQUE on the Grand Front Osaka plaza has free Wi-Fi, 130 seats and 3 m ceilings.6 Near Osaka Castle & Tanimachi, SÖT COFFEE opens daily 08:00–19:00 and takes cards.

Laptops, time limits and outlets

A password on the wall is not an invitation to spend the afternoon. A 2024 Gendai Business report described more cafés setting 90- to 120-minute limits at busy times, stopping customers from using power outlets, or putting up signs that ban studying.5

The safest approach is to work outside the lunch rush, order again if you stay long, and ask before you plug anything in. Some cafés with Wi-Fi are tiny: LiLo Coffee Roasters is a stand-style bar that began as the coffee corner of a hair salon.8

Early and late cafés with Wi-Fi

For an early start, 喫茶ナポレオン at 橘二丁目 9-15 in South Osaka opens at 07:00 and closes at 12:00, with Tuesdays and Wednesdays off. Cafe & Goods B.S.C, also in South Osaka, opens at 07:00 Monday to Saturday and stays open until 22:00 on Fridays.

For evening work, NOSTRA at 菅原町 10-26 is open until 23:30 Monday to Saturday, and LiLo Coffee Roasters until 23:00 daily. エミュリボン in Shinsaibashi opens only at 18:00 on weekdays. Salon de AmanTo天人 in Nakazakichō, at 中崎西一丁目 7-26, keeps 12:00–22:00 every day.

Your café deserves better than a pin someone else dropped

Free listings are free for good. A featured page gives you photos, a menu and your own URL, in your café's own design, for less than a coffee a day.
