Nairobi sits at 1,795 m, so its terraces are warm by day and cool after dark. The warmest stretch is December to March, with daytime highs in the high twenties °C, and in June and July evenings can drop to 9 °C.1 The city calls itself the Green City under the Sun, and it is the only capital with a national park inside its boundaries.1

Kilimani has the most cafés with outdoor seating, ahead of the CBD, with one more on Museum Hill. Downtown they range from a tea house to a specialty bar open until 22:00; in Kilimani they are on Chaka Road and George Padmore Lane.

Local tip: Bring a layer for an evening terrace: in June and July Nairobi nights can fall to 9 °C, even after a sunny day.1

Rain and the best months

The long rains run from March to May; April is the wettest month, averaging about 130 mm, and the wet weather lingers into June.2 The short rains follow from October to December.3 January and February are relatively dry and sunny, and July to October brings clear skies.2 Average temperatures stay between about 17 °C and 21 °C all year, so the season matters more for rain than for heat.2

Downtown: Standard Street and the tea house

Café Amka on Standard Street has tables outside and is open daily from 08:00 to 22:00, late enough for an evening cup in the center. Its co-founder chooses beans on farm visits; in May 2026 a V60 cost about KSh 550.4

The Kenya Tea Packers Tea House has outdoor seating and opens Tuesday to Saturday, 08:00–18:00. Ketepa's tea houses were planned for specialty teas made by baristas, served next to standard black tea, with the first in the KTDA Farmers Building on Tom Mboya Street.5 A short walk away, the Stanley's Thorn Tree Café is open-air too; its acacia, the third on the site, went in in 1997.6 Kenyan tea itself dates from 1903, when G. W. L. Caine planted it at Limuru, and commercial production began in 1924.7

Kilimani side streets and Museum Hill

In Kilimani, Kesh Kesh Coffee Roastery & Cafe on Chaka Road and Pete's Cafe & Burrito Haven on George Padmore Lane both have outdoor tables and Wi-Fi. Kesh Kesh also has indoor seating, a fallback when a long-rains shower comes through.

Vogue Cafe is on Museum Hill, where the National Museum shares its grounds with the Nairobi Snake Park and a botanic garden with a nature trail.8 The museum dates from 1910, when the East African Natural History Society founded it, and a walk on the garden trail fits easily before coffee.8

Smoking on terraces

Kenya's Tobacco Control Act of 2007 restricts smoking in restaurants, hotels, bars and other eating places to specially designated smoking areas, which must meet set standards and hold a certificate of compliance.9 The 2014 regulations also ban smoking on streets, sidewalks and verandas next to a public place.10 In September 2025 public health officials proposed banning smoking in all public places and scrapping the designated zones; at the time it was a proposal, not law.11
