Kenya is heavily connected by phone: it had 88 million active mobile subscriptions at the end of June 2026, a penetration rate of 165%, and Safaricom held 69.8% of them.1 Free public networks came later. The government switched on its first public hotspot at City Market in Nairobi on 9 November 2022, the start of a plan for 25,000 sites nationwide.2

The city's tech scene is older than that. The iHub, an open space for developers, investors and tech companies, launched in March 2010 at the Bishop Magua Centre on Ngong Road with fast internet from KDN and Zuku;3 its founders were Erik Hersman, Juliana Rotich, David Kobia and Ory Okolloh, and it now sits in the Jahazi Building on James Gichuru Road.4

Local tip: Ask the staff for the exact network name before you join: look-alike hotspots are the trick Kenyan security experts warn about most.2

Kilimani and Westlands

No single neighborhood dominates for Wi-Fi: Kilimani, Westlands and the CBD each have a share. In Kilimani, Kesh Kesh Coffee Roastery & Cafe at 375 Chaka Road and Pete's Cafe & Burrito Haven on George Padmore Lane both pair Wi-Fi with outdoor tables.

In Westlands, Vogue Cafe on Museum Hill has Wi-Fi, seating indoors and out, and takes cards, while Sigiria Coffee House opens daily from 07:00 to 17:00. Vogue Cafe's neighbors are the National Museum and the Nairobi Snake Park.5

Downtown and Riverside Lane

Eco Cafe on Mama Ngina Street keeps the longest day of these cafés, 07:00 to 22:00 every day, a block from Kenyatta Avenue. Budget for the table: most Nairobi coffee shops charged KSh 300–600 for an espresso in May 2026.6

French Mission Roastery on Riverside Lane, in Kileleshwa ward, roasts specialty coffee and opens Monday to Saturday, 08:00–18:00. Sunday is the gap: it is closed all day.

When the power goes

Grid failures still happen. On the evening of Wednesday 29 July 2026 a widespread outage hit Nairobi, the Coast, Mount Kenya and parts of the Central Rift; large parts of the CBD went dark while some buildings stayed lit on backup generators.7 Power was back in some areas by 23:32, and Kenya Power reported supply restored everywhere the next morning.8

A café router needs power too, so arrive with a charged laptop and keep mobile data as a fallback.

Mobile data as the fallback

Most Kenyans online use their phones: 84.4% of internet subscribers connected through mobile broadband in the third quarter of the 2025/26 financial year. Average use rose to 15.1 GB a month per subscription, and 5G users averaged 53.5 GB.9 A local SIM with a data bundle is the simplest backup when a café network slows down.

Using café networks safely

Kenyan security experts warned, when the public hotspots rolled out, that attackers set up look-alike networks with names close to the real one.2 Their advice: check the network name carefully, turn off auto-connect and Bluetooth discoverability, use strong passwords and a VPN, and log in only to sites served over HTTPS.2
