Smoke, haze and downpours

Outdoor tables are not smoking areas. Under the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024, smokers must stay at least three meters from the last table of a restaurant, and the health ministry has issued more than 100,000 summonses under the rule.5

Smoke from forest fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan sometimes brings haze, and heavy downpours often flood parts of the city center, where drainage has not kept up with development.1 Covered verandas and a table near the door make a terrace easier to leave when a storm arrives.
