Specialty coffee in Kuala Lumpur runs on imported beans. Almost all of the coffee beans Malaysia uses come from abroad: 126,062 tonnes in 2024, against a domestic harvest of 2,861 tonnes.1 Most of what Malaysia grows is liberica, a large-beaned species with Johor as a major production center.2 One Half Coffee in Petaling Jaya pours a Malaysian espresso from My Liberica alongside single origins from Bolivia and Ecuador.3

KLCC has the most specialty bars, with Blitz X Colony on Jalan Kia Peng, Kenny Coffee Roasters on Persiaran KLCC and a Feeka branch. TTDI comes next, with Community Coffee Roasters and, on Lorong Datuk Sulaiman 7, Kha Coffee Roasters and Artisan Roast's TTDI shop. Sentul, with Artisan Roast in the D7 building on Jalan Sentul and Curio Coffee Roasters at Rivercity on Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, ties with Bukit Bintang and Mont Kiara.

Local tip: Artisan Roast Sentul is closed on Saturday and Sunday, so for a weekend pour-over go to Feeka on Jalan Mesui, open daily 08:00–23:00, or to Curio at Rivercity, open every day except Wednesday.

How KL's roasters started, 2010 to 2014

Artisan Roast opened in November 2010, started by Michael and Amirah, a couple who had run a café in Scotland, where they met at university. After 12 months at Yayasan Selangor they moved to a shop lot in TTDI that became their headquarters.4 They began importing full containers of green coffee from Brazil and Sumatra, and because a container lasted longer than six months, they sold beans on to other cafés.4

VCR followed in 2013 in a two-story building about 90 years old on Jalan Galloway; it started as a multi-roaster café and now roasts its own beans. Feeka opened on Jalan Mesui the same year.3 103 Coffee was founded in 2014 by Ken Wong, Irvine Quek and Jewel Ting, all winners of national competitions, and set up its own roastery in 2017.3

Competition baristas and a world title

Several of the city's roasters are run by competition baristas. Keith Koay, who founded One Half in 2016, is a three-time Malaysian Barista Champion, and Jason Loo of Contour has won the national barista title four times.35 At The Hub Coffee Roaster, open since 2015 and now at six KL locations, manager Liew Kar Weng won the 2023 Malaysian Brewers Cup.3

In June 2026 Nas Jaafar became the first Malaysian to win the World Brewers Cup, beating finalists from Australia, the Czech Republic, Hong Kong, South Korea and France in Brussels. He had qualified by winning the Malaysia Brewers Cup in 2025.6
