Sitting outside in Mérida is a matter of timing. The record high of 44.2 °C was set in May, the hottest month, and the rains fall from June to October.1 Shade decides a lot: at Voltacafé in Plaza Carmesí, umbrellas and leaves cover the courtyard tables.2

Paseo de Montejo and Santa Lucía have the most cafés with outdoor seating, followed by single terraces in Santa Ana, García Ginerés, Colonia México and Altabrisa.

Local tip: Order a champola, sorbet blended with milk, at El Colón on Paseo de Montejo; the drink came from the Caribbean as guanábana sorbet with unbeaten milk.3

Voltacafé fills the inner courtyard of Plaza Carmesí on Calle 53, a couple of blocks from Parque de Santa Lucía, and serves caramel frappés among its cold drinks.2 It opens daily 08:00–23:00, and the Wi-Fi reaches the whole courtyard.5

Mornings, Sundays and Saturday nights

On Sundays the Biciruta, a free bike route from Paseo de Montejo to Parque de San Juan, starts at 08:00, and on Saturdays the Remate de Paseo de Montejo hosts Noche Mexicana at 20:00, with music, dance and traditional dress.8 On Sundays from 10:00, Mérida en Domingo fills the Plaza Grande with crafts, food and shows.8
