The pastelería (pastry shop) and the panadería (bakery) matter in Lima because of lonche, the light afternoon meal of a hot drink with bread or something sweet. On the coast it is usually eaten between about 17:00 and 19:30, and the word comes from the English 'lunch', which in the late 19th century replaced the older term 'las once'.1
Hotel B in Lima serves it as a formal tea time, daily 16:00–19:00, and calls lonche a legacy of English influence after independence.2 Miraflores has about a third of the bakery cafés, ahead of Barranco and San Isidro, and the rest are spread from Jesús María to Surco.
Local tip: For lonche after work, Piero's Pastelería Fina on Avenida Alvarez de Arenales stays open until 22:30 Monday to Saturday; in October, ask for turrón de Doña Pepa.
Where these cafés are: Miraflores (9), Barranco (5), San Isidro (4), Jesús María & Lince (3), Pueblo Libre, Magdalena & San Miguel (3), San Borja & Surquillo (2), Santiago de Surco (2), Centro de Lima (2).

A home lonche is coffee, tea, chamomile or milk with cocoa, plus bread with ham, butter, tuna, jam or manjar blanco, the Peruvian milk caramel. Cafés add cakes, sandwiches, empanadas and arroz con leche, and at Christmas, panettone.1
Manjar blanco is also the filling of the alfajor, two discs of dough joined with it or with dulce de leche. The name comes from the Arabic for 'the filling', and in viceregal Lima the nuns of rival convents made it popular. Voladores are a thinner-layered version with pineapple jam; the King Kong, from Lambayeque and La Libertad, is a giant one sold by the half kilo or kilo.3
La Casa del Alfajor, founded in 1987, sells alfajores in many flavors along with turrón de Doña Pepa and guargüeros.4 In October 2026 a single alfajor cost S/ 6.90, a pack of 20 traditional alfajores S/ 15.50 and a 400 g tub of manjar blanco S/ 10.00.5
October is turrón month. Turrón de Doña Pepa, an anise-flavored block topped with candies, candied fruit or nuts, accompanies the Señor de los Milagros celebrations, and in October 2026 Inacal published the first technical standard for it: the traditional version must use wheat flour, vegetable fat, sugar, salt, anise, sesame and egg yolk.6 A personal portion cost S/ 9.90 and a 1–1.1 kg turrón S/ 48.90 at La Casa del Alfajor that month.5
Alfajores get their own day too: the third Friday of January, which fell on January 16 in 2026.7
Calle Enrique Palacios in Miraflores has two: Latte Bakery at 897 and La Postrería Café at 1008. La Teoría de los 6 Cafés has a branch at Calle General Mendiburú 890 and two in San Isidro, on Calle Las Camelias and Avenida Los Conquistadores, all opening at 07:30.
Away from the coast, Pastelería Vaccari is on Jirón Francisco Bolognesi 514 in the Pueblo Libre and Magdalena area, and Piero's Pastelería Fina, at Avenida Alvarez de Arenales 2001 in Jesús María, is open Monday to Saturday 07:30–22:30, late enough for lonche after work. Pausa Café, on Avenida Horacio Urteaga in Jesús María, serves daily 10:00–22:00.
