Emoliente from the cart

The base is barley water and flax, sometimes with chamomile or lemongrass and a few drops of lime, and vendors add uña de gato (cat's claw), alfalfa, boldo or cola de caballo (horsetail) to order. Carts are standard stainless-steel units with a heated central tank, racks of herbal extracts and a top shelf for sanguches (sandwiches).1

The trade descends from the tisanera, the Afro-Peruvian herbal-drink seller Pancho Fierro painted in 1850.1 In 2019 metropolitan Lima had about 8,600 emolienteros, 70% of them women, and their federation said cold weather lifted sales by 40%.2 A glass cost S/ 2 in 2023, according to the same federation.3

Law 30198 of 2014 recognizes street emoliente sellers as microenterprises of tourist and cultural interest and makes February 20 the Day of Emoliente.4 In Barranco, Obdulia Emolientera at Jirón Nicolás de Piérola 136 serves daily 16:00–22:30.

Bread, cake and coffee until 22:00
