Colombo is warm all year, with average daytime highs of about 30–32 °C, and its two monsoons, April to June and September to November, bring heavy rain.1 An outdoor table here is worth most in the early morning and the evening, or under trees.
Half of these cafés are in Cinnamon Gardens, on Ward Place, Wijerama Mawatha, Srimath Anagarika Dharmapala Mawatha and the National Museum grounds. The rest are in Kollupitiya and on Galle Road in Bambalapitiya, plus one on Chatham Street in Fort.
Local tip: For outdoor coffee before the heat builds, The brown bean on Srimath Anagarika Dharmapala Mawatha opens its tables at 07:00; Peppermint Cafe on Wijerama Mawatha is open even earlier, around the clock.
Where these cafés are: Cinnamon Gardens (4), Kollupitiya & Galle Face (2), Bambalapitiya (1), Fort & Pettah (1).

Barefoot Garden Café, at 704 Galle Road in Kollupitiya, is set in a garden patio with tables under the trees, reached through the Barefoot store or from the car park at the rear, with a bar terrace and a gallery that regularly shows local artists.2 Nearly 30 years after it opened, the garden also hosts concerts, plays, book launches and weddings.3 Its hours are 10:00 to 19:00 from Monday to Saturday, with an 18:00 close on Sundays and Poya days.3
Further south, at 746 Galle Road in Bambalapitiya, Café 1959 pairs outdoor seats with an air-conditioned room, opens daily 08:00–22:00, is smoke-free, has vegan options and takes cards. Wheelchair access is limited.
Laksala Museum Gallery Café, where wheelchair access is limited, opened in August 2013 on the premises of the Colombo Museum, in a building planned to respect the National Museum’s layout and heritage. The handicraft store covers about one and a half acres, with a gem gallery and a cultural display, and includes a coffee shop and a restaurant aimed at visitors.4
Divide Specialty Coffee & Matcha at 48A Ward Place is a specialty bar that serves matcha as well as coffee and has outdoor seats. Peppermint Cafe, at 76 Wijerama Mawatha, has outdoor tables and is open 24 hours, and The brown bean, at 104 Srimath Anagarika Dharmapala Mawatha, serves outside from 07:00 to 22:00 and does takeaway.
In Fort, Radicle has outdoor seats on Chatham Street. Its owner, Mahesh Alkegama, opened it in 2025 behind an art gallery, as a stage for local artists and for coffee grown in Sri Lanka.5 The historic building is one where Duran Duran filmed a music video.5 Radicle also has Wi-Fi, useful if you plan to stay through lunch.
In Kollupitiya, Brown Sugar shares its site with the Isle Amore restaurant and serves doughnuts, brunch, coffee and desserts.6 It has tables outside and an air-conditioned room inside.
October is Colombo’s wettest month, at about 359 mm of rain, with November and May close behind; March and April are the hottest, with highs averaging around 31 °C.1 In those months, choose a café with an indoor room as a fallback: Café 1959 and Brown Sugar both have air-conditioning.
By area: Fort & Pettah Kollupitiya & Galle Face Cinnamon Gardens
Barefoot Garden Café, behind the Barefoot store on Galle Road in Kollupitiya, has tables under trees in a garden patio, a bar terrace and a gallery of local art. It opens 10:00–19:00 Monday to Saturday and 10:00–18:00 on Sundays and Poya days.
Yes. Laksala Museum Gallery Café, where wheelchair access is limited, opened in August 2013 on the Colombo Museum premises, in a building designed to respect the National Museum’s heritage layout. It has a coffee shop, a restaurant and outdoor seating.
Colombo has two monsoon seasons, April to June and September to November. October is the wettest month at about 359 mm, followed by November and May, so outdoor tables are least reliable then. Daytime highs stay around 30–32 °C all year.
