Kaohsiung's climate is tropical savanna, close to tropical monsoon: monthly means run from 20 to 29 °C, and the harbor water stays above 22 °C all year.1 Rain is concentrated from June to August, peaking at about 512 mm in August, while December and January get only about 18 to 19 mm.1

That makes winter the season for 戶外座位 (hùwài zuòwèi, outdoor seats). The city is milder and drier than northern Taiwan, and the sea takes the edge off summer heat.2 Cianjin & Sinsing has the most cafés with outdoor tables, followed by Sanmin, with a few more in Lingya, by the harbor and near the museum park.

Local tip: From June to August, plan outdoor coffee for the evening, when the riverbank café 愛河戀手調咖啡河堤館 on Mingfu Street is open until 23:00; from December to March, daytime highs near 25 °C make a midday terrace easy.1

Along the Love River

The Love River flows 12 km from Renwu to the harbor, and Love River Park runs along its bank downtown, with a night market, outdoor cafés and cultural events.3 After dark, the riverside promenade has live music.2

Upstream, Mingcheng 2nd Road crosses the river on Mingcheng Bridge, next to the 河堤公園 (riverbank park).4 Two Sanmin cafés named for the riverbank set tables outside: 愛河戀手調咖啡河堤館 on Mingfu Street 11, open 14:00–23:00, and 布蘭奇研磨咖啡's 河堤 branch on Mingzhe Road 24, open 11:00–19:00 and closed on Mondays. 咖普咖啡 at Ziyou 1st Road 123 has outdoor seats as well.

Terraces downtown

In Cianjin & Sinsing, Cafe de Menippe at Linsen 1st Road 195 has outdoor tables and takeaway from 08:30 to 22:00. 興趣咖啡 (Simtree Cafe) at Zhongzheng 3rd Road 73 opens 07:30–22:00 with a terrace, and 公寓咖啡 on Renyi Street 227 runs 11:30–21:00. 綠波cafe at Nanhua Road 89 has outdoor seats and step-free access.

In Lingya, Café de Flore has outdoor tables and no smoking, Tuesday to Sunday 11:00–19:00, and 羅伯咖啡 (Rob Cafe) is at Linsen 2nd Road 56. In Fengshan, 享啡咖啡 at Fengnan Road 205 opens daily 08:30–20:30, and Café de Homer is at Tiyu Road 41.

Harbor air and the museum park

In Hamasen, OH! Cafe (握咖啡) at Binhai 2nd Road 5 has outdoor seats, takeaway and a no-smoking rule. Sizihwan beach, through the tunnel beyond Hamasen, is best visited at sunset.2 At Pier-2, the warehouses share their grounds with an Art Plaza and the West Coast Bike Path.6

The Museum of Fine Arts stands in a cultural park of about 40 hectares, with a lake, a marsh, woodland and footpaths.5 Near it, Dau.Oe at Qinghai Road 599 bakes and has outdoor tables and Wi-Fi (10:30–18:00, closed Wednesdays), and 鼻子咖啡餐廳 (Nose Tea & Cafe) on Longshui Road 231 has a terrace open until 22:30.

Timing a terrace in the heat

Daily highs exceed 30 °C from April to November and hover around 25 °C from December to March.1 In summer, sit outside after sunset: 愛河戀手調咖啡河堤館 opens only at 14:00 and serves until 23:00, and Nose Tea & Cafe stays open until 22:30 every day but Wednesday. June to August bring most of the rain, so a covered table is the safer choice then.2
