Outdoor seating in Hội An takes three forms: courtyards and rooftops inside the Old Town's merchant houses, sidewalk and garden tables in the surrounding town, and open terraces at the edge of the paddies. The courtyard is the oldest of them. A traditional Hội An shophouse runs back from the street as shop, living rooms, an open-air courtyard, then kitchen and storage at the rear.1

Just over half of the cafés with outdoor seats are in the Old Town; the rest are in the town around it and out in the rice fields.

Local tip: From May to August, take an outdoor table before 09:00 or after 17:00. If the afternoon heat wins, SnapStay on Thái Phiên has air-conditioned seats as well as outdoor ones.

Where these cafés are: Old Town (9), Around town (5), Rice fields & villages (2), An Hội (1).

Which months are comfortable for sitting outside in Hội An

February to April is the outdoor season, with daytime temperatures of 26–31°C and nights of 19–23°C. From May to August it gets hotter and more humid, and July and August average highs of 34°C.2

The wet season runs from September into January, and river floods peak in October and November.2 In late October 2025 the riverside streets of the Old Town were still under 1–1.5 m of water as the flood receded.3 By December and January, average highs are down to about 24°C, cool enough that a sheltered courtyard beats an open terrace.2

Old Town courtyards, terraces and a rooftop

On Trần Hưng Đạo, Bill Coffee & Tea at no. 22 has outdoor seats and opens 07:00–22:00, and The Curve Cafe at no. 98 is open 24 hours. On Trần Phú, Faifo Coffee at no. 130 has a rooftop, and Phin Coffee Restaurant sits down the alley at 132/7. Cargo Club on Nguyễn Thái Học, Phượt Cafe at 24 Nguyễn Huệ and Artbook, open until 23:00, also have outdoor seats.

Between 09:00 and 11:00, and from 15:00 to 22:00 (21:30 in winter), these lanes are closed to motorbikes, so an Old Town terrace looks onto people on foot rather than traffic.4

Garden and field cafés outside the center

In town, Bonte café at 99 Lê Hồng Phong opens at 06:00 with outdoor tables, and Vintage Taste Deli Cafe at 39 Lê Quý Đôn runs 07:00–22:00. SnapStay Hoi An at 16 Thái Phiên has both outdoor seats and air-conditioning, useful when an afternoon outside gets too hot. Rosie's Cafe at 2 Mạc Đĩnh Chi has outdoor seats and keeps daytime hours.

In the rice fields, Nghé Coffee down Hẻm 32 Lê Thánh Tông is open 08:00–20:00, and Yesh! at 198 Nguyễn Phan Vinh serves brunch outdoors from 07:30 until it closes at 14:30.

Timing a terrace: sun, lanterns and what to drink

Mornings and late afternoons are the time to sit outside; the midday sun is best avoided.7 Sunset comes at about 18:17 in June and 17:17 in December (2026 times), so winter terraces go dark before dinner.6 Once a month, on the 14th lunar night, electric lighting in the Old Town is switched off in favor of lanterns and candles.5

For a hot afternoon outside, nước mót is the local drink: a herbal tea of lemongrass, ginger, cinnamon, licorice and lemon, served cold in summer and hot in the wet winter.8 In the Old Town, a plain cà phê ran about 20,000₫ as of late 2025, against 60,000–65,000₫ for a cappuccino.9
