Perth's weather does most of the work for a terrace table. The city averages 8.8 hours of sunshine a day, and December to February are nearly dry, with about 43 mm of rain across the three months.1 Summer afternoons are hot: February's mean maximum is 31.7 °C, and around five days a year pass 40 °C.1

Subiaco has the most cafés with outdoor tables, nearly a quarter of them, ahead of the CBD; Crawley & Nedlands and Leederville & Mount Hawthorn follow. Most are breakfast and lunch places, and about two-thirds have stopped serving by 15:00.

Local tip: On a summer day, take a terrace table before 10:00, ahead of the heat and the Fremantle Doctor; for an evening outside, Gemini Café on Albany Highway serves until 21:00.

Timing a table around the Fremantle Doctor

The Fremantle Doctor is Perth's name for the cooling summer sea breeze, and it has been called that since at least the 1870s.2 It usually sets in between 10:00 and 15:00, arriving from the west-south-west and swinging to the south by early evening, and near the coast it often blows at 28–37 km/h.2 It relieves hot north-easterly days, and temperatures often drop below 30 °C a few hours after it arrives.1

That gives a terrace two good windows on a summer day. Sit before about 10:00 for still air, or after the breeze has come in for cooler air with some wind; on a calm 40 °C afternoon, an indoor table is the better call.

UV, shade and the wet months

Shade matters more than heat. Perth's average midday UV index in summer is around 12, and SunSmart advice is to cover up whenever the index is 3 or higher, so a table under an umbrella or awning is worth waiting for.3

Winter brings the rain. June averages 127.1 mm and July 147.0 mm, and about 78% of the year's rain falls between May and September, though July's mean maximum is still 18.4 °C.1

Footpath tables in the city

In the City of Perth, a café needs an Outdoor Dining Permit for tables on a footpath or other public land, and there has been no charge for it since 1 February 2019.4 The rules are practical: furniture, umbrellas and screens are packed inside at the end of each day, a clear path must be left for pedestrians, and smoking is not allowed in outdoor dining areas.4

In the CBD, Basilica at 125 St Georges Terrace has outdoor tables and opens at 06:00 on weekdays, Anaya is at 113 Murray Street, and Liberty Cafe & Bar at 21 Mounts Bay Road opens 08:00–16:00 on weekdays. 99 Shades of Green and Little Soho Coffee Co. also open at 06:00 but close at weekends.

Subiaco and the inner suburbs

In Subiaco, Brew Ha: The Ritual at 162 Rokeby Road opens at 06:30 every day, Bishop St Cafe & Kitchen is at 37 Bishop Street, Mimosa at 1 Forrest Street and Obi Coffee at 500 Hay Street. La Maison Des Eclairs Cafe at 27 Railway Road stays open until 17:30 from Wednesday to Sunday, and Cantina at 6 Forrest Walk is open until midnight from Tuesday to Saturday.

Beyond Subiaco, Tom's at 290 Beaufort Street and The Lincoln Nook at 102 Lincoln Street have tables in Mount Lawley, Modus at 184 Harborne Street in Leederville, and Be Free at 1 City Farm Place in East Perth. The Tenth State at 6 Broadway and Kith Eatery at 51 Aberdare Road serve Crawley and Nedlands. The longest outdoor day belongs to Gemini Café at 293 Albany Highway in Victoria Park, open 06:00–21:00 daily.
