Perth's specialty roasting started small and suburban. Dean Gallagher, back from years as a school principal in Papua New Guinea's Simbu Province, swapped his kitchen oven for a 1 kg roaster in a hot tin shed in 2000 and began roasting direct-trade beans as Five Senses; in 2006 it opened its first Barista Academy in Perth.1 Dôme, Western Australia's own café chain, had also started as a specialty roasting business, in the mid-1980s.4

The specialty cafés are spread thinly across the inner city and the western suburbs. The CBD has the largest share, with Rosso Espresso at 89 St Georges Terrace, Nero Espresso Coffee at 800 Hay Street, V. Kopi Roasters at 580 Hay Street and Kofè Coffee Roasters on Wellington Street. Leederville and Mount Hawthorn, Floreat and Wembley, and Crawley and Nedlands come next, close together, and The Grind is at 65 Hay Street in West Perth.

Local tip: Get to The Grind at 65 Hay Street before 13:30 on a weekday; it doesn't open on Saturdays or Sundays.

Who roasts in the city center

Offshoot Coffee, in Hibernian Place at 480 Hay Street, roasts on a Loring S15 Falcon imported from the United States; it began with single-origin coffee and now offers many more.2 Max + Sons, at 140 William Street, buys in instead, pouring beans from Mecca, Proud Mary and Loaded.2

La Veen, which began on King Street, poured a house blend of Five Senses beans when it opened its Raine Square café in September 2019, and planned to install a Loring roaster that year to roast limited releases for retail drip bags.3

Single origins and direct trade

Northbridge has a specialty stop of its own. In 2024 Broadsheet described Giant Coffee as a small laneway shop pouring single-origin coffee from Twin Peaks and Daylight Coffee Roasters, with a Viennese einspänner (espresso under whipped cream) and croissants on the counter.5

Five Senses runs its training academies in Melbourne and Sydney as well as Perth, and in 2014 it paid to build its own mill in Tiga Raja, North Sumatra, to control quality at the source.1

Roasteries out of the center, and short hours

West of the center, Leftfield Coffee Roasters is at 30 Drake Street, Black Matter Coffee Roasters on Walters Drive, Perth Coffee Roasters on Nanson Street and Impresso Roastery on Cambridge Street. Near the university, Loaded Craft Coffee Roasters is on Loch Street, Felix and Co Specialty Coffee on Hampden Road and Rocketfuel on the UWA campus. South of the river, Sprolo Specialty Coffee is on Canning Highway and Bread Espresso Bar on Barker Avenue in Como.

The day is short. Offshoot Coffee in Hibernian Place serves from 07:00 to 15:00 on weekdays.2 The Grind on Hay Street in West Perth runs 07:00–13:30 and stays shut at weekends.

What a cup costs, and a late Starbucks

Specialty doesn't mean a big premium. In October 2026 a small flat white in the 6000 postcode, the city center, cost anywhere from A$3.50 to A$6.10, around an average of A$5.00.6

The big American chain arrived late. Starbucks opened in Sydney in 2000 and closed 61 of its 87 Australian stores within eight years; its first Perth store, at Clarkson in the northern suburbs, was only approved in March 2024.7
