Bread reached Kathmandu by two routes. Krishna Pauroti, opened in the late 1940s by a baker who had learned his trade in Calcutta, sold pauroti (पाउरोटी, bread) to the city's elite.12 By the mid-1970s, small German-style bakeries had appeared to feed the Europeans who arrived on the hippie trail.3

The older bakeries first lived on foreign customers; by 2010 a Jhamsikhel baker said locals made up a large share of his trade, and bakeries had reached trekking centers such as Namche Bazaar.2 Thamel and Baneshwor now have the most bakery cafés, ahead of Jhamsikhel and Patan, with a smaller group in Boudha.

Local tip: Buy loaves at Pumpernickel in the morning: a 2012 review warned the bread could be sold out by noon.5

Pumpernickel and the first Thamel bakeries

Pumpernickel Bakery (पम्परनिकेल बेकरी) on Paryatan Marg is the best-known survivor of that first wave.3 The family dates its Thamel baking to 1986 and says it began as a small garden café; it now fills four floors.4 A 2003 profile credited it with bringing the proper croissant and bagel to Kathmandu, and the counter still lists sourdough, ciabatta, bagels and croissants in plain, chocolate, almond and jalapeño-cheese versions.14

Doors open at 06:30, and the garden seats fill each morning with trekkers eating before a flight to Lukla.3 A 2012 review advised arriving before noon, when the bread could sell out, and priced a chocolate croissant at Rs 60.5

French Bakery, Kettle Café and the Thamel lanes

French Bakery stands on Paknajol Marg, just up from Chhetrapati, and opens 07:00 to 21:00. A coffee guide updated in January 2026 recommends it for pastries, European wine and vegan or gluten-free food rather than for its coffee, at prices close to Europe's.6

Himalayan Arabica Beans has a bakery counter and opens 06:30 to 21:30. Kettle Café (केटल क्याफे) in Kwabahal adds vegan dishes until 21:00, and Coffee House (कफी हाउस) on Tridevi Sadak sells baked goods with brunch. Toward Kathmandu Durbar Square, Galli Cafe (गल्ली क्याफे) on Gyachemuga Galli opens 08:30 to 21:00.

Patan, Jhamsikhel and the library bakeries

Patan's bakery cafés start early. SM Bakery Cafe & Gaming on Dharmasthal Marg opens at 06:00, and Ujama Koffie & Bakery with Library on Shankhamul Marg at 06:30, with vegan dishes and shelves of history and politics that are for reading in the café, not for sale.7 Tumbaha Bakery and Cafe and Sarang Bakery and Coffee Shop are also in Patan.

Bodhi Books & Bakes moved from Maharajgunj to Tangal and serves breakfast and bakery items among its books, 10:00 to 22:00.7 In Jhamsikhel, Sun Cafe & Bar (सन क्याफे एण्ड बार) pairs a bakery counter with brunch from 08:00 to 21:00, and Bake and Bite Cafe is in Maanbhawan.

Sweets counters in Baneshwor and Boudha

Away from the tourist districts, many bakeries double as sweet shops. A 2010 survey found cakes and buns sold next to Indian-style sweets and bought as a quick snack that many saw as healthier than fried samosas or jalebis; many bakeries had also added a few seats.2

Siddhartha Sweets and Bakery on Subidha Marga in Baneshwor fits that pattern, smoke-free with Wi-Fi and open 10:00 to 18:00. Cloud Cafe in Baneshwor runs 08:00 to 21:00, and Cake And Bake is on Shram Marg (श्रम मार्ग). In Boudha, Sunshine Bakery and Cafe keeps 07:00 to 18:00, and Bakery Cafe Bouda is in Chuchepati.
